NURSING SUPERVISOR (Medical Short Stay Units)

Job Summary

This position works with patients and staff in the Medical Short Stay Units, which primarily serve patients from the Emergency Department and Palliative Care. Patients typically have an expected length of stay between 24 and 72 hours and receive cardiac monitoring. The focus is on nursing assessment, acute care, and patient/family education.

Responsibilities
  1. Assist the Clinical Nursing Director in planning and managing patient care services.
  2. Provide leadership in nursing practice, emphasizing quality care, education, and research.
  3. Coordinate between management and patient care activities aligning with Michigan Medicine's mission.
  4. Manage budgets, staffing, hiring, and staff performance evaluations.
  5. Participate in program development, patient care standards, and quality improvement initiatives.
  6. Foster collaboration with other health professionals and administrative staff.
  7. Exercise supervision over nursing and support staff as delegated.
Clinical Practice

Flexibility in scheduling, including evenings, nights, and weekends, is required for clinical assessments, staff mentoring, and evaluations across all shifts.

Management of Clinical Area

Contribute to unit goals, staffing planning, daily operations, policy implementation, and budget management. Participate in hiring, staff evaluation, and policy development. Address patient and family concerns.

Quality Assurance

Engage in quality improvement activities, promote research integration, and support Lean principles within the unit.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Current RN licensure in Michigan.
  • One of the following: Bachelor's in Nursing, or Associate's/Diploma in Nursing plus Master's in Nursing, or five years RN experience including two in adult medical-surgical nursing.
  • Nursing leadership certification or completion within two years of hire (e.g., CNML, NE-BC).

Desired Qualifications
  • Experience as a healthcare supervisor in adult inpatient or short-stay units.
  • Recent short-stay RN experience, proficiency with EPIC software, and advanced computer skills.
  • Master's degree in Nursing, leadership skills, change facilitation, and knowledge of Michigan Medicine policies and Lean principles.
Work Schedule

40 hours/week, variable shifts, mostly off-shift, at University Hospital - Medical Short Stay Units.

Work Mode

Hybrid or remote work options are at the department's discretion and subject to review.
