Job Overview

Fairview is seeking a Nursing Station Technician (NST) at UMMC-East Bank! This position is 0.8 FTE (64 hours per two weeks), with 8-hour night shifts and an every-other-weekend rotation.

About this position:

The University of Minnesota Medical Center (UMMC) is an integrated academic health care system, comprising two hospitals and numerous adult specialty clinics located on the East and West banks of the UMMC campus in Minneapolis. It is the flagship facility of Fairview, providing innovative medicine and redefining community health.

The NST role combines Nursing Assistant and Health Unit Coordinator duties to deliver direct patient care and administrative support.

In this role, you will work under the supervision of a nurse, demonstrating excellent customer service, collaboration, and interpersonal skills with patients, families, and the healthcare team in a fast-paced environment. The NST assists with patient care delivery, transports patients and equipment, sets up and maintains rooms, reorders, and stocks supplies. Additionally, the NST manages unit desk functions such as answering phones, processing admissions, discharges, and transfers, transcribing orders, assembling patient charts, and ordering tests.

License/Certification/Registration

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers certification is required. OnTrack participants must obtain BLS certification upon completing the program.

And one of the following:

  • Successful completion of Fairview’s OnTrack Nursing Assistant training program or another Fairview-sponsored Nursing Assistant program.
  • Six months of recent direct care experience in a long-term, home care, or acute care setting (e.g., Nursing Assistant, PCA, Resident Assistant, Emergency Room Technician).
  • Current enrollment in an LPN, RN, or Nurse Practitioner program, with at least one semester of clinical rotation completed.
  • Current certification on the Minnesota Nursing Assistant Registry upon hire. This certification does not need to be maintained throughout employment unless transferring into another Nursing Assistant, NST, or related position.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Previous experience as a Health Unit Coordinator, Nursing Assistant, or related roles.
