Job summary

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Nursing and 3 years of full-time supervisory nursing experience.
  • Master's Degree in Nursing and 1 year of full-time supervisory nursing experience.
  • Equivalents: one year of experience may substitute 30 semester hours; no substitution for 3 years of supervisory experience.

Responsibilities

  • Supervises and evaluates subordinate staff; handles personnel actions including selection, discipline, performance, leave, grievances, scheduling and assignments.
  • Directs health services to achieve optimal care levels and meet care standards for offenders.
  • Establishes staffing guidelines to ensure adequate nursing coverage in all offender areas.
  • Maintains a 24/7 nursing schedule.
  • Ensures annual evaluations are completed as assigned.
  • Duty officer coverage.
  • Recruitment and retention of nursing staff.
  • Develops, implements and revises institutional health services procedures.
  • Leads monthly nursing meetings and distributes minutes.
  • Participates in inter-departmental meetings to advocate nursing needs and coordinate health services with other disciplines.
  • Administers programs such as infection control, staff development, nursing quality improvement and utilization review.
  • Attends institutional and executive/leadership meetings to represent Health Services.
  • Participates in quarterly P&T committee and Nurse Managers QA on nursing charts.
  • Covers nursing shifts during staff absence; attends Nurse Manager meetings in-person and virtually.

Responsibilities
  • Supervises and evaluates the work of subordinate staff, effectively recommends personnel actions related to selection, disciplinary procedures, performance, leave of absence, grievances, work scheduled and assignments.
  • Directs health services to assure achievement of optimal level of care to offenders to meet care standards.
  • Establishes and maintains guidelines for staffing within the health care agency to assure adequate nursing coverage all offender areas.
  • Maintains a nursing schedule to cover the institution 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
  • Assures annual evaluations are completed as assigned.
  • Duty officer coverage.
  • Recruitment and retention of nursing staff.
  • Primarily responsible for development, implementation and revision of institutional health services procedures.
  • Assures monthly nursing meetings and minutes are complete and distributed
  • Participates in inter-departmental meetings to advocate for nursing department needs and to coordinate health services with other disciplines. Ensures employee's health program is accurate.
  • Administer special programs as infection control, staff development, nursing quality improvement and utilization review.
  • Attend institutional and Executive and/or Leadership meetings to represent Health Services.
  • Active member of the quarterly P&T committee and Nurse Managers monthly QA on nursing charts.
  • Covers nursing shifts during the absence of staff. Attends Nurse Manager meeting in-person and virtual.

Qualifications
  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's Degree in Nursing and experience equal to three years of full-time supervisory/management nursing experience;
  • graduation from an accredited college or university with a Master's Degree in Nursing and experience equal to one year of full-time supervisory/management nursing experience;
  • an equivalent combination of the required education and experience, substituting one year of experience for thirty semester hours or equivalent of education; no substitution for three years of full-time supervisory/management nursing experience.

Licensure as a Registered Nurse in the State of Iowa by the Iowa Board of Nursing or licensure as a Registered Nurse in accordance with the Nurse Licensure Compact Administrator's Agreement of the National Council of State Boards of Nursing.
