Job summary

St. Vincent's Medical Center in Bridgeport, part of Hartford HealthCare, seeks a Nursing Professional Development Practitioner to influence learner competency and lead education initiatives across the organization.

The RN will collaborate with nursing leadership to develop programs, guide onboarding, and standardize practice in alignment with ANA standards and system goals. BSN is required; MSN preferred; CT RN license and NPD/Clinical Certification within two years are expected.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 3 years of active clinical nursing experience with at least 1 year in acute care.
  • Oncology clinical experience required.
  • One year of teaching experience preferred.
  • Licensed RN in CT prior to hire.
  • NPD or Clinical Specialty Certification required within two years of hire; Chemo certification preferred.
  • BLS required.

Responsibilities

  • Learning Facilitator: bridges gaps identified through learning needs assessment using adult learning principles.
  • Collaborative Partner: works with nursing leadership to assess needs, develop programs, monitor competency, and support inter-professional learning.
  • Role Development: promotes professional nursing practice per ANA standards and supports progression from novice to expert.
  • Mentor: contributes to professional development of others and ongoing learning.
  • Orientation: develops and evaluates onboarding programs when roles/responsibilities change.
  • Change Agent: drives process improvements using change management theories.
  • Competency Management: captures knowledge, skills, and performance across practice stages.

Job Summary

The Nursing Professional Development (NPD) Practitioner is a Registered Nurse with NPD practice judgement and expertise who influences professional role competence and growth of learners. The NPD practitioner is responsible for supporting learners within the context and framework of the Nursing Professional Development, Scope and Standards practice as approved by the American Nurses Association.

This position works in collaboration with nursing leadership to foster and influence competency management, clinical nursing education, professional role development, policy standardization, collaborative partnerships, scientific inquiry, transition to practice and onboarding/orientation of new Hartford HealthCare colleagues.

The practitioner is an essential member of the nursing leadership team who promotes the alignment of regional NPD and practice excellence with the HHC system.

Job Responsibilities
  • Learning Facilitator: Uses the educational design process and adult learning principles to bridge the knowledge, skills and/or practice gaps identified through learning needs assessment and evaluation of outcomes.
  • Collaborative Partner: Collaborates with members of the nursing leadership team to assess learning needs, develops programs, monitors clinical competency and supports action plans. Represents nursing in the development of inter-professional learning activities.
  • Role Development: Promotes professional nursing practice and quality patient care according to the ANA standards of practice. Endorses the theory-based approach through the continuum of practice from novice to expert.
  • Mentor: Advances the profession of nursing and the NPD specialty by contributing to the professional development of others and supporting the ongoing professional learning as individuals develop across practice, professional and educational settings.
  • Orientation: Develops, facilitates, conducts and evaluates programs during the onboarding phase and when changes in roles, responsibilities and practice occur.
  • Change Agent: Works to transform processes at micro, meso and/or macro system levels. Uses change management strategies and theories to drive desired outcomes.
  • Champion of Scientific Inquiry: Promotes a spirit of inquiry, the generation and dissemination of new knowledge and the use of evidence to advance NPD practice, guide clinical practice and improve the quality of care for the healthcare consumer/partner.
  • Competency Management: Utilizes tools to capture knowledge, skill, ability judgment and performance during the situational or dynamic phases of practice (i.e. initial and ongoing competencies).
Qualifications
  • Minimum of 3 years of active clinical nursing experience. At least 1 year of experience in an acute care environment. Experience as a preceptor.
  • Previous Oncology clinical experience required for this position.
  • One year of relevant teaching experience is preferred, nursing professional development experience preferred.
  • Licensed Registered Nurse from the CT DPH obtained prior to hire date.
  • NPD or Clinical Specialty Certification required within two years of hire hire/transfer, Chemo Certification preferred.
  • BLS required.
Education
  • BSN required. MSN or enrolled in MSN program highly preferred.
