Job summary

Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist invites nursing students in their final year to join the Nurse Summer Externship Program for a nine-week, paid experience across Wake area clinical teams. You will work with a Registered Nurse preceptor and participate in simulations, didactic sessions, and shadowing opportunities to strengthen your clinical skills.

Eligibility requires final-year RN students with ADN/BSN tracks, BLS, and availability to work 40 hours weekly for the program duration from May 31,

Qualifications

• Nursing students entering final year with graduation December 2027 or May 2028.
• Enrolled in accredited ADN or BSN program.
• Must have current BLS/BLS certification (AHA/Red Cross).
• Available to work continuous 40 hours per week for duration of extern program.
• Able to participate in three 12-hour shifts per week plus education sessions.

Program Overview

The Nurse Summer Externship Program at Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist offers a nine-week paid opportunity for senior nursing students to gain valuable hands-on experience while working alongside our experienced teams across the Wake area. This program serves as a significant stepping-stone, helping senior nursing students enhance their clinical expertise as they prepare for the transition to become licensed Registered Nurses.

Eligibility Requirements

• Nursing students who will be entering their final year of nursing school at the start of the program with anticipated graduation December 2027 or May 2028
• Currently enrolled in an accredited Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) or Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program.
• Scheduled to complete Med/Surg clinical by Spring 2027
• Must possess current Basic Cardiac Life Support AHA (BCLS) or American Red Cross BLS certification
• Must be available to work continuous 40 hours per week for the duration of the Nurse Extern Summer Program.
• Must be available to participate in three 12-hour clinical shifts per week, in addition to scheduled specialty education sessions and/or clinical observation experiences.
• Must maintain scheduling flexibility, including availability for rotating shifts, weekends, and holidays, based on departmental and program needs.

LICENSURE, CERTIFICATION, And/or REGISTRATION

• Must be listed on the North Carolina Nurse Aide I Registry (NA I) by April 16, 2027
• Must be listed as a Nurse Aide II (NA II) with the North Carolina Board of Nursing by May 14, 2027
• Must possess a current American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) or American Red Cross BLS certification by May 14, 2027

• Assists with admissions, transfers, discharges, and pre- and post-procedure care.
