This part‑time role is primarily Monday through Friday, day shift, with some flexibility needed for occasional evening clinical rotations. Best of all, there are no weekends or holidays, offering a schedule that supports great work‑life balance.

The Nurse Instructor plays an exciting role in shaping the next generation of nurses by bringing learning to life in both the classroom and clinical setting. You’ll create engaging, hands‑on experiences that help students build confidence, think critically, and apply the nursing process to deliver safe, high‑quality patient care.

Working alongside a collaborative team of faculty, you’ll support student growth, spark curiosity, and foster an inclusive environment where future nurses can thrive and feel prepared for real‑world practice.

A background in general medical‑surgical nursing will help you connect real‑world experience to the learning environment in a meaningful way!

Responsibilities

• Deliver engaging didactic and clinical instruction that brings concepts to life and bridges theory to practice. Guide, coach, and evaluate students as they develop clinical judgment, critical thinking, and confidence in applying the nursing process. Design meaningful learning experiences and assignments that promote safe, high‑quality patient care and positive outcomes.
• Foster a culture of respect, professionalism, and collaboration in both classroom and clinical settings. Support diverse learning needs by adapting teaching strategies and coaching students in areas such as communication, cultural awareness, and civility. Build strong, supportive relationships with students, faculty, and healthcare team members while effectively navigating and resolving challenges as they arise.
• Partner with faculty to ensure cohesive course delivery and a consistent, high‑quality student experience. Contribute to curriculum development, program evaluation, and school initiatives, and actively participate in committees and shared governance. Serve as a role model for teamwork, communication, and leadership within the academic and clinical environments.
• Continuously enhance teaching effectiveness through feedback, self‑reflection, and professional development. Incorporate evidence‑based teaching practices and current literature into both classroom and clinical instruction. Participate in quality improvement efforts and program evaluation processes to strengthen student outcomes and support ongoing innovation in nursing education.
• Initiate opportunities to maintain the mission and values of the parent organization. Serve as a role model for communication with other health care team members to enhance and influence nursing within the organization. Incorporate the values of trust, respect, collegiality, professionalism and caring to build an organizational climate that fosters the development of the student and other faculty.
• Develop strategies to incorporate principles of dignity and respect in meeting the diverse learning needs of students in both the classroom and clinical practice area. Work productively and effectively within a complex educational environment. Resolve and manage conflict effectively and in a timely manner.
• Coach students on cultural diversity and civility in the educational environment. Create an environment which recognizes and values differences in peers, patients, families and communities.
• Maintain active membership in professional nursing organizations. Engage in educational activities that promote one's professional growth in the role of a nurse educator. • Maintain professional practice knowledge base through continuing education programs and conferences. Provide resources and coaching to diverse learners to assist them in meeting their individual needs. Establish and maintain positive, caring relationships with students, faculty, management, patients/families and all other members of the health care team. Utilize critical thinking skills to lead students in the application of the nursing process in the classroom and in the clinical area. Demonstrate clinical judgment with critical thinking, analytical and problem‑solving abilities required as related to various aspects of the teaching‑learning process. Instruct and evaluate multiple students and create meaningful learning assignments both in the classroom and in the clinical area. Demonstrate mastery of course content and clinical competence. Contribute in the development of school policies.
• Utilize teaching strategies grounded in educational theory and evidence‑based teaching practice. Provide quality classroom and clinical instruction to groups of nursing students. Use personal attributes in facilitating student learning. Recognize the influence of teaching styles and interpersonal interactions on learner outcomes. Create opportunities for learners to develop critical thinking and clinical reasoning skills.
• Utilize current literature to design evidence‑based teaching strategies in classroom and clinical settings. Participate in quality improvement projects and/or scholarly work. Share learning from outcomes with other faculty and schools of nursing. Participate in the systematic program evaluation process. Utilize assessment and evaluation data to improve student performance.
• Promote creative and innovative teaching learning strategies in the classroom and during the clinical experience. Participate in strategy development for educational changes at UPMC Schools of Nursing. Utilize leadership skills to shape and implement change across all the schools of nursing. Demonstrate a commitment to nursing, the school and the program goals. Serve as a professional role model for students in the classroom and in the clinical area. Demonstrate leadership abilities in working with multiple faculty and students in the educational environment. Serve as co‑chair of school committees as assigned.
