Position Summary: At Stony Brook Medicine, under the general direction of the Lead Administrative Nursing Supervisor, this position of Nursing House-wide Supervisor has the responsibility for supervising and managing clinical staff, including nursing, social work and counseling staff on the off-shift to ensure excellent standards of compassionate, person-centered care are maintained. Fulfills the role of onsite Administrator-On-Duty (AOD) and provides leadership, guidance, mentorship, and support to clinical staff to ensure safety and smooth running of all clinical services. Qualified candidates will demonstrate superior patient care and possess outstanding communication skills while adhering to our high standard of excellence.

Job Duties & Essential Functions:

  • Supervision: Oversee and direct the work of nursing, social work and counseling staff on the off shifts (evening, weekends, and holidays).
  • Scheduling: Plan and manage staffing schedules, ensuring adequate coverage and appropriate skill mix across the hospital.
  • Performance Evaluation: Evaluate staff performance, provide feedback, and conduct performance reviews and staff competencies, as assigned.
  • Training and Development: Mentor, train, and provide ongoing education to nursing staff.
  • Quality Assurance: Ensure that clinical care is consistent and meets established standards and protocols.
  • Patient Safety: Maintain a safe environment for patients and staff.
  • Communication: Facilitate effective communication between patients, families, clinical staff, and providers. Manage any patient, family or staff complaints to a satisfactory conclusion.
  • Care Planning: Participate in the development and implementation of patient care plans, behavior support plans, and therapeutic intervention plans as needed.
  • Administrative Tasks:
  • Documentation: Maintain accurate and complete records of patient care and staff activities.
  • Quality and Performance Improvement: Participate in quality improvement and regulatory compliance initiatives and data collection.
  • Problem Solving: Address and resolve issues and concerns related to safety, patient care and staff performance.
  • Communication: Serve as a point of contact between clinical staff and hospital administration.
  • Policy Implementation: Ensure that policies and procedures are adhered to by all staff.
  • Collaboration: Collaborate with other healthcare professionals to ensure coordinated patient care.

Required Experience & Qualifications:

  • Graduation from an accredited School of Nursing.
  • Licensed and currently registered to practice professional nursing in New York State.
  • Baccalaureate in Nursing (or five years of acute care nursing experience) required.
  • Progressive leadership experience appropriate to position in an acute care facility for a minimum of two years.
  • Successful completion of ACLS Program within six (6) months of employment.
  • Excellent supervisory and communication skills necessary for coordinating staff activities and interpreting operating policies and procedures for staff.

Preferred Experience & Qualifications:

  • Critical care experience preferred.
  • Nursing specialty certification preferred.
  • Previous experience acting as Administrator On-Call preferred.
  • Master's degree in Nursing or Health Related Field preferred.

  • Ability to stand, walk, and move quickly for extended periods, especially during emergencies.
  • Capacity to manage high-stress situations with clear decision-making and physical capability.
  • Ability to manage the emotional and physical challenges that come with caring for patients who may be agitated or experiencing mental health crises.
  • Must be able to respond quickly and take rapid action including using physical restraint procedures to stabilize patient in a crisis.
  • These physical demands are tailored to the nature of the job, which requires a high level of alertness, physical engagement, and responsiveness, especially when dealing with patients in acute psychiatric distress.

Anticipated Pay Range:

The starting salary range (or hiring range) for this position has been established based on relevant experience. The above salary range (or hiring range) represents SBEILH's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.

Prior to start date, the selected candidate must meet the following requirements:

  • Successfully complete pre-employment physical examination and obtain medical clearance from Stony Brook Eastern Long Island's Employee Health Services *
  • Complete electronic reference check with a minimum of three (3) professional references.
  • Successfully complete a 4 panel drug screen*
  • Meet Regulatory Requirements for pre-employment screenings.
  • Provide a copy of any required New York State license(s)/certificate(s).

Failure to comply with any of the above requirements could result in a delayed start date and/or revocation of the employment offer.

*The Human Resources department will be responsible for any fee incurred for examination.

With 70 beds, SBELIH is Suffolk County's first hospital, serving the North Fork since 1905.
