About PIW

The Psychiatric Institute of Washington provides comprehensive behavioral healthcare for adolescents, adults, and senior adults suffering from mental health and addictive illnesses. PIW is a 150‑bed, short‑term, acute care hospital offering inpatient, partial and intensive outpatient hospitalization, as well as specialized treatment programs for chemical dependency. Situated in the safe, historical Tenleytown neighborhood, PIW is one mile from the Tenleytown Metro stop and within walking distance to local cafes and restaurants.

Responsibilities
  • Direct activities for efficient functioning of all systems and personnel on the unit.
  • Supervise RNs, LPNs and provide direct care to patients.
  • Manage nursing care provision and coordinate patient requirements with the Nurse Manager.
  • Monitor diagnostic, consultative and medical services for patients to be provided promptly as ordered.
  • Coordinate resources from other disciplines and departments in delivery of patient care.
  • Investigate patient and staff grievances promptly; inform Nurse Managers, Program Directors, and Director of Nursing as needed.
  • Evaluate and verify employee performance through review of completed assignments and work techniques.
  • Identify staff development and training needs and ensure training is provided.
  • Interview and select nursing staff; facilitate in‑service training.
  • Round to assess current staffing on units; record staffing corrections in shift report log binder.
  • Direct activities necessary for efficient functioning of systems and unit personnel.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing required.
  • RN license in the District of Columbia.
  • BLS certification.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Basic Health Information Management (HIM) system knowledge required – Cerner preferred.
  • Four or more years of inpatient psychiatric experience with clinical and administrative responsibilities.
  • At least two years of experience in a supervisory position.
  • 3‑8 years of overall nursing experience required.
  • Experience collaborating with staff and patients of all racial, ethnic, gender, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
  • Experience with policies and procedures related to scope of nursing.
  • Ability to manage staff and advise senior management.
