Job Summary

Job Type: Full Time

This position is responsible for the operations of the Emergency Department.

Responsibilities
  • Implement selection of accountability measure sets selected by the Hospital District Leadership (e.g., Core Measures, HCAHPS, CALNOC, CA Health Engagement Network).
  • Assure participation and achievement of hospital goals in processes monitored by Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) and Joint Commission Accountability Measures.
  • Ensure all staff meet annual requirements for licensure, certifications, and skills updates.
  • Develop, revise, and monitor compliance of policies and procedures for departmental operations.
  • Identify department indicators for performance improvement and provide data.
  • Ensure staff comply with National Patient Safety Goals.
  • Recruit and hire staff to meet department needs.
  • Maintain effective communication with other departments and medical staff.
  • Maintain a work environment that promotes teamwork and staff growth.
  • Ensure knowledge of JCAHO, CMS and Title 22 regulatory standards is adhered to at all times.
  • Direct staffing and scheduling decisions to anticipate needs and schedule staff in a fair, objective manner.
  • Evaluate personnel performance and provide written documentation at required intervals; complete evaluations in a timely manner.
  • Facilitate Quality Improvement Program to monitor nursing practice in the department, consistent with District QI plan and the Scope of Service in Emergency Services.
  • Remain current in nursing practice by attending education programs and assist staff in keeping current in knowledge.
  • Ensure staff attendance at orientation and education programs; orient new employees to the department prior to independent scheduling and offer regular in‑services.
  • Establish and maintain policies and procedures for the Emergency Department; incorporate recommendations from staff and physicians.
  • Establish and attend to the budget for the Emergency Department; incorporate recommendations from staff and physicians.
  • Inspect use and condition of equipment, supplies, and cleanliness of the department by rounding on patients and/ with EVS leadership.
  • Maintain a spirit of cooperation among all members of the Emergency Department.
  • Coordinate the Emergency Department schedule; plan appropriate staffing, equipment and instruments.
  • Identify interdepartmental problems and work towards satisfactory solutions.
  • Manage resources of the department consistent with the organization’s strategic plan and fiscal plans; establish and achieve annual objectives that support the organization’s mission, vision and goals.
  • Collaborate with leaders throughout HDMC to ensure open lines of communication and continuity of high‑quality care.
  • Collaborate with the immediate supervisor, CNO/COO to ensure all responsibilities of the director are met and in line with strategic goals of HDMC.

  • May have to perform emergent care for patients and families
  • Requires judgment/action which could result in the death of a patient
  • Subject to numerous interruptions by phone calls, visitors, staff, etc.
  • Subject to varying and unpredictable situations
Physical Demands

Employee Status and Working Hours
  • Reports to: CNO/COO

  • Hours: Monday through Friday and flexible as required to meet department needs
  • Working a shift on the floor may be required
Minimum Education / Experience
  • Required current California RN license
  • Minimum 7 years RN experience in Emergency Department
  • Charge Nurse and/or Supervisor Experience
  • Associate’s Degree in Nursing, Bachelor’s Degree in nursing preferred
  • Current MICN, ACLS, NRP and PALS certifications
Preferred Education
  • Bachelor’s in Nursing

Salary: $65.32 - $104.52 per hour. Individual wages are determined based upon a number of factors including, but not limited to, an individual’s qualifications and experience.
