Summary

The VAD (Ventricular Assist Device) Nurse Coordinator coordinates the VAD care of all pediatric and adult VAD patients. The VAD Coordinator provides follow‑up and care across the continuum from pre‑VAD, during VAD implant admission and post VAD. They collaborate with members of the health care team to enhance patient care by developing, supporting, and educating nursing staff. They are a clinician, educator, investigator, consultant, and leader, making clinical judgments based on current research to solve complex problems. The VAD Nurse Coordinator is an integral member of a larger multidisciplinary team contributing to excellence in patient care, research, teaching, and leadership.

Responsibilities
  • Collaborate with the VAD program administrator in short, intermediate, and long‑range planning for the VAD program through regularly scheduled staff and individual program meetings.
  • Participate in Continuous Quality Improvement: develop, implement, and evaluate the VAD program’s CQI efforts focusing on maximizing patient survival and quality of life; review patient resource utilization and identify areas for improvement; develop and improve clinical pathways.
  • Educate patients and families about the VAD process, planning and designing educational materials, and presenting educational programs to patients, staff, professionals, community, and outside agencies.
  • Oversee and/or coordinate the clinical, psychosocial, and financial needs of the VAD patient, coordinating evaluation tests and consults to determine VAD candidacy, and facilitating VAD by organizing patient and VAD team; monitor inpatient status, discharge needs, and follow‑up care per program standards.
  • Document and maintain patient VAD information in the electronic medical record with current data to ensure regulatory compliance.
Education
  • Bachelor’s degree in Nursing (BSN) from a state‑accredited school of professional nursing.
Licensure / Certification
  • Licensed to practice as a Registered Nurse in the state of North Carolina.
Professional Experience
  • Three (3) years of professional nursing experience, including two (2) years in VAD or transplant, critical care, or disease‑specific area.
