Summary

The Nursing Assistant (NA) is a patient care support partner working under the delegation of the Registered Nurse (RN) or Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN). The NA provides direct patient care and assists with non-direct patient care coordination. They are expected to perform basic care and comfort standards, understand patient needs, and assist in caring for acutely ill patients. The NA practices medical asepsis, respects patient dignity, privacy, and cultural differences, and adheres to policies and procedures, responding appropriately during emergencies. They maintain the patient environment, perform general unit upkeep, manage supplies, and document care accurately in the electronic health record.

Work Performed

  • Prepare patients, equipment, and supplies for procedures and provide manual assistance.
  • Record patient data and inform RN/LPN of findings.
  • Administer treatments and personal care, including feeding, bathing, dressing, nail care, bed-making, ambulation assistance, enemas, skin care, and elimination needs.
  • Participate in teaching activities as instructed by RN or providers.
  • Assist with physical exams, dressing changes, weighing patients, and vital signs.
  • Support patient transportation, specimen collection, and unit cleanliness.
  • Document patient care, participate in professional development, and support staff development.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of routine and special treatments, sanitation, hygiene, safety, infection control, and hospital layout.
  • Physical ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, stoop, crouch, crawl, climb, and lift objects over 35 pounds with assistance.
  • Ability to follow instructions, document and communicate effectively, and establish effective working relationships.

Qualifications

  • Completion of an approved Level I Nurse Aide program or successful NC Nurse Aide I competency test.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Current listing as a Nursing Assistant I with the Division of Facility Services, with no substantiated findings of abuse, fraud, neglect, or misappropriation.
  • Maintain BCLS certification, to be completed by the end of orientation.
