Job summary

WellSpan Health in Chambersburg, PA, is seeking an Intermediate Care Unit Nursing Attendant to join the Progressive Care Unit. The role supports high-acuity cardiac-focused patients on a 72-hour biweekly schedule with 12-hour day/night shifts and every third weekend.

A floating charge nurse assists across shifts, and EKG, ACLS, and preceptor duties are part of the unit’s operations. Responsibilities include patient care, safe environment maintenance, timely communication with the primary nurse,

Qualifications

• Formal education: high school diploma or equivalent; nursing program graduate preferred.
• Experience in customer service and healthcare; prior Nursing Attendant/Nurse Aide experience or enrollment in nursing program required.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.

Responsibilities

• Communicate pertinent information to the primary nurse.
• Seek guidance as necessary for performance of duties.
• Assist and maintain a neat, clean and safe environment for patients and staff.
• Attend 50% of in-services and staff meetings for area.
• Perform duties independently, accurately and efficiently, recognizing their importance to patient care across age groups.
• Observe patient condition changes and promptly report to the primary nurse.
• Safely position, transfer and transport patients using proper body mechanics.
• Assist in maintaining unit equipment and report malfunctions.
• Help orient new personnel as a buddy and provide friendly guidance.
• Respond to emergencies and patient call lights promptly.
• Assist in post mortem care and transport of body to Morgue when needed.
• Perform external cardiac compressions during Code Blue if required.

Intermediate Care Unit (IMCU) – Nursing Attendant

• 30-bed Intermediate Care Unit providing care for the following patients
• Post Interventional
• Electrophysiology pre- post procedures i.e. ablations, pacemakers
• Respiratory Failure
• High acuity patients with a strong focus on cardiac care
• Functions as a step-down intermediate care unit meeting the acute care patient needs.
• EKG Class, ACLS and residency classes are provided.
• Individualized, comprehensive program with a primary preceptor.
• A floating charge nurse for support on every shift 7 days a week
• Full time (72 hours biweekly)
• Shift: 12- hour day/night (6-6)
• Every third weekend
• Eligible for shift and weekend differential

Responsibilities

• Demonstrates ability to communicate pertinent information to the primary nurse.
• Seeks guidance and direction, as necessary, for performance of duties and completion of assignment.
• Assists and maintains a neat, clean and safe environment for patients and other nursing staff.
• Attends 50% of in-services and staff meetings for area.
• Familiar with duties and performs them independently, accurately, efficiently, promptly, recognizing their importance and relationship to patient care for all age/population groups.
• Receives instructions and follows directions accurately and in a cooperative manner.
• Observes changes in patient condition & promptly reports to primary nurse.
• Utilizes proper body mechanics to prevent injury to self and others. Safely positions, transfers, and transports patients.
• Assists in maintaining equipment assigned to patient care and reports malfunctioning of equipment to appropriate personnel.
• Assists in orientation of new personnel to the unit by being friendly and encouraging and serving as a preceptor or "buddy".
• Recognizes and responds to priorities in the patient care process. Readily adapts to changes in workload and responds efficiently.
• Responds appropriately to emergency situations.
• Anticipates units' needs, and promptly answers/responds to patient call lights, pages and safety checks.
• Assists in post mortem care and transports the body to Morgue on occasion.
• Performs external cardiac compressions to patients during Code Blue activities if required.
• Transports medications within the hospital as requested and needed according to Hospital policy.

Department: Patient Services - Progressive Care Unit

• Completes patient ADL’s.
• Applies patient electrodes and attaches patient to monitor on arrival to unit.
• Performs 12 lead EKG's.
• Completes 75 % of age-specific newsletters yearly.
• Cross trains to all Critical Care Department areas.

Qualifications

Education: Formal Education and Training - High school graduate or the equivalent preferred or a graduate of a nursing educational program.

Experience: Experience applying customer service behaviors and communication skills required. Previous experience as a Nursing Attendant, Nurse Aide, or the completion of a nurse aide training program or enrolled in a nursing educational program required.

Certifications/Licensure: Basic Life Support (BLS)
