Position Summary
This is a dual role encompassing both Unit Clerk and Care Partner responsibilities. Responsible for clerical duties, communication and reception duties on assigned nursing units. In addition, employee works with other members of the patient care team to deliver care to specific patient populations. The employee will maintain competency for population specific groups with consideration of physical, communication, safety, nutrition, and psychosocial needs.
Education, License & Cert
High School Graduate or equivalent.
Experience
Must have successfully completed a CNA training course, or a minimum of 1 year experience in a nurse aide or equivalent role, or be currently enrolled in a licensed nurse education program and have successfully completed a fundamentals of nursing course.
Essential Functions
- Lifting, turning, and positioning patients using Safe Patient Handling equipment ( > 35 pounds) as appropriate.
- Feeding.
- Assisting with range of motion exercises.
- Mobilizing patients – transfers and ambulation using Safe Patient Handling equipment as appropriate and following the Mobility protocol.
- Exercise protocols.
- Discontinuing Foley catheter.
- Observing confused and difficult patients.
- AM/PM hygiene care.
- Toileting, shaving, washing, brushing hair, dental and mouth care.
- Simple dressing changes.
- Incentive spirometry supervision.
- Surgical preps.
- Postmortem care.
- Administer cleansing enemas.
- Removal of peripheral IV catheters.
- Sitting with confused/disoriented patients or those requiring 1:1 observation for safety/suicide purposes, as assigned.
- Perform and record vital signs accurately: temperature, pulse, respirations, blood pressure, heights and weights.
- I&O records.
- Bowel movements, ADLs and activities.
- Perform and record specimen collection: obtain urine, stool, sputum specimens and instruct patients in proper technique.
- Complete support activities.
- Complete EKGs.
- Transport patients as needed.
- Serve, set up and retrieve trays.
- Distribute water pitchers as appropriate.
- Order and distribute nourishment.
- Transport equipment.
- Venipuncture (RPH ICU only).
- Transport blood products to/from patient care area.
- Participate in patient safety/patient satisfaction.
- Answer call bells.
- Participate in patient rounding.
- Report signs of abuse to nursing staff.
- Recognize, troubleshoot and initiate corrective action on equipment.
- Maintain neat and tidy environment by emptying laundry, delivering equipment, and keeping patient rooms clean and safe.
- Inventory and assure disposition of patients’ belongings when admitted, transferred, and/or discharged.
- Ensure proper storage of equipment.
- Recognize emergency situations and initiate action plan.
- Notify RN/LPN of changes in patient condition.
- Comply with policies and procedures of hospital/nursing department.
- Support the philosophy of the hospital and nursing department.
- Maintain CPR certification and practice.
- Demonstrate cost‑effective patient care by proper use of equipment, prudent use of supplies, and accurate charging.
- Participate in performance improvement activities to improve service and care.
- Demonstrate strong communication and organizational skills.
- Communicate using telephone, computer systems.
- Answer telephone promptly and politely, identifying self, title, and department.
- Receive and send messages accurately and timely.
- Communicate with patients, family, and healthcare team in a concise, tactful, and considerate manner.
- Represent hospital professionally and courteously, being sensitive to verbal and non‑verbal communications.
- Register patients, assemble and disassemble charts in a timely manner, and perform clerical work per unit guidelines.
- Notify appropriate RN of any STAT orders.
- Implement downtime procedures including order interpretation and transcription as needed.
- Make photocopies.
