Description
The Nursing Attendant supports the Registered Professional Nurse by providing direct patient care and related activities as assigned.
Responsibilities
- Assist nursing staff with procedures, treatments, vital signs, and patient care activities.
- Perform activities of daily living, mobility, and personal hygiene tasks.
- Observe, record, and report patient data, behaviors, and responses to treatment.
- Report pertinent patient information to the registered nurse.
- Ensure a safe environment for patients, staff, and visitors.
- Assist with patient admission, transfer, and discharge procedures.
- Maintain food and fluid intake records.
- Manage excretion and fluid loss procedures.
- Support safe patient lifting, positioning, and ambulation, using mechanical devices as needed.
- Apply heat and cold therapies as appropriate.
- Care for deceased patients and support their families, securing property.
- Prepare and maintain diagnostic and therapeutic equipment.
- Assist with physical exams and other procedures.
- Conduct hourly rounding, noting pain, position, toileting, and possessions.
- Report and document patient valuables.
- Transport patients and escort ambulatory patients.
- Run errands such as transporting specimens and supplies.
- Maintain a clean, organized environment and equipment.
- Follow safety protocols and utilize aggression control measures when necessary.
- Assist with patient restraints and observe safety checks.
- Communicate effectively with patients, families, and visitors.
- Support the mission and values of Mount Sinai Health System.
- Participate in ongoing staff development and educational meetings.
- Adhere to dress code, attendance, and punctuality standards.
- Maintain knowledge of hospital policies, patient rights, and confidentiality.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Training as a medical or nursing assistant, or equivalent experience.
- Preferred experience in inpatient healthcare.
- American Heart Association Heartsaver Certification or BCLS.
