Summary

SUMMARY:

Under the supervision of the Registered Nurse and within hospital and department policies and procedures, assists in caring for patients and/or families from admission to discharge.

Definition

A nursing assistant is a paraprofessional trained to provide personal care and related health care and assistance to individuals who are sick, disabled, or infirm, and who are residents of or receiving services from licensed healthcare facilities or agencies. They hold a license as a nursing assistant issued by the Department of Health.

Responsibilities

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Collaborate with Registered Nurse to organize work and set priorities.
  • Perform personal care skills as outlined by the Rhode Island Department of Health.
  • Perform daily activities of living, ambulates patient as appropriate.
  • Report unsafe conditions, equipment in need of repair, and remove from service.
  • Communicate all pertinent patient observations to the Registered Nurse.
  • Maintain quality assurance and infection control according to policies and procedures.
  • Accurately document data in the EHR, demonstrate ability in emergency situations, and function as a patient observer if needed.
Other Information

Performs other related duties as required.

Basic Knowledge
  • Current Rhode Island license as a Nursing Assistant.
  • High school graduate or equivalent preferred.
  • Ability to perform basic computer skills.
  • Certified in American Heart Association Healthcare Provider Basic Cardiac Life Support (BLS).
  • Knowledge of providing care across the lifespan, considering aging, development, and cultural patterns.
Experience

One-year experience as a Nursing Assistant preferred.

Working Environment and Physical Conditions

Works in healthcare settings such as hospitals and clinics. May involve prolonged sitting, standing, walking, bending, squatting, stooping, and lifting patients or equipment.

Independent Action

Works under supervision, referring complex problems to the supervisor.

Supervisory Responsibilities

None.
