Job Description: Nursing Assistant (Non-Certified)

Our agency is committed to supporting the recovery of individuals with mental illnesses. We offer comprehensive medical and support services for children, adults, and families across South Carolina.

This position is located at the Department of Mental Health, WSHPI - 220 Faison Drive, Columbia, SC 29203.

This is a temporary, hourly paid position.

As a Nursing Assistant, working under the supervision of a Registered Nurse, you will perform therapeutic care and assist patients with activities of daily living (ADL). You will also help maintain a safe and therapeutic environment.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
  1. Understanding and applying the Nursing Care Plan (NCP) and Treatment Plan to provide nursing care; participating in quality control and peer review as assigned.
  2. Providing care for patients with mental illnesses, substance abuse issues, aggressive behaviors, or suicidal tendencies.
  3. Using therapeutic communication skills, considering age-specific and cultural competencies.
  4. Performing basic care and ADLs for patients.
  5. Following Standard Precautions and conducting environmental quality control checks.
  6. Assisting in caring for patients with behavioral or physical problems.
  7. Providing basic care for patients requiring special precautions, seclusion, restraints, and supportive care, while adhering to policies on hygiene, nutrition, toileting, and fluids.
  8. Maintaining a clean and therapeutic environment by staying occupied and meeting patient needs.
  9. Completing all mandatory training requirements.

Minimum qualifications include a high school diploma or GED. Bilingual abilities in English and Spanish (or another language) are advantageous.

The candidate must be able to lift up to 50 pounds, stand, walk, reach, pull, push, stoop, bend, and climb stairs. Ability to tolerate noise and work in patient areas for extended periods is necessary. The role may require working beyond scheduled hours to ensure safe staffing and compliance with regulatory standards.
