Job description

With our Agency's mission to support the recovery of people with mental illnesses, we provide a complete array of medical and support services for children, adults, and families throughout South Carolina.

This position is located at the Department of Mental Health, 220 Faison Drive, Columbia, SC 29203.

As the Nursing Assistant, working under the supervision of the Registered Nurse, you will perform therapeutic care and assist patients in meeting their needs of performing activities of daily living (ADL). You will also assist in providing and maintaining a safe therapeutic environment.

Responsibilities for this Nursing Assistant (Non-Certified) include but are not limited to:
  1. Demonstrates knowledge of the Nursing Care Plan (NCP) and Treatment Plan as it relates to providing nursing care. Participates in quality control monitoring and peer review as assigned.
  2. Provides care for patients with mental illnesses, substance abuse, aggressive behavior, or suicidal tendencies.
  3. Demonstrates knowledge of therapeutic communication skills, considering age-specific competencies and culturally diverse patients.
  4. Identifies the need for and performs basic care/activities of daily living for patients.
  5. Demonstrates knowledge of Standard Precautions and performs Quality Control Environmental checks.
  6. Assists in caring for patients with behavioral/physical problems.
  7. Provides basic care for patients requiring Special Precautions, Seclusion, 4-Point Restraints, and supportive Protective Restraints; follows policy on meeting patients' special needs for hygiene, nutrition, toileting, fluids, and ADLs.
  8. Participates in maintaining a clean and therapeutic environment by being productively occupied at all times and meeting the needs of the patient and lodge.

Note: THIS IS A PART-TIME POSITION. SALARY IS PRORATED BASED ON HOURS WORKED.

A high school diploma or GED is required. Bilingual abilities in English and Spanish (or another language) are a plus.

The selected candidate must have the ability to lift up to fifty (50) pounds; stand, walk, reach, pull, push, stoop, bend, and climb at least two or three flights of stairs. Must tolerate noise levels and circulate in patient areas for long periods. Ability to work with repetitive unusual patient behaviors and beyond scheduled hours as needed to meet staffing standards/regulatory requirements is essential. Cross-training for other lodges and floating as needed is required.
