Position Summary
The Nursing Assistant performs specific responsibilities under the direction and supervision of a licensed nurse. Functions within the framework of the NAI listing granted by the NC Department of Health and Human Services. Practices within the philosophy and goals of patient care services. In addition, the Nursing Assistant may be utilized in the Observer Role responsible for monitoring one or more assigned patients on a designated unit for a specified time period.
Responsibilities
Participates in Quality Improvement (QI) Activities: Participates in problem solving resolution activities and identifies opportunities for improvement to change behavior. Participates in data collection. Employs safe practices, infection control, and fire and disaster regulations. Participates in cost savings activities.
Participates in Education: Attends and utilizes staff development programs and educational resources to meet unit objectives and/or individual objectives. Fulfills annual mandatory educational requirements. Participates in the orientation of new staff and students, as delegated by the supervising RN.
Follows hospital and unit-based policies and procedures: Provides quality patient care. Maintains familiarity with job description and legal implications of role. Maintains active NAI licensure/certification.
Builds interpersonal relations and communications. Listens to the ideas, opinions, and feelings of others. Gives and receives constructive feedback. Recognizes and intervenes when personal conflicts have the potential to interfere with patient care or team relationships. Works effectively with others in a team environment. Demonstrates behaviors and attitudes that are respectful or others and fosters enhanced communication and teamwork. Seeks help and utilizes chain of command appropriately.
Makes unit, department and hospital contributions: Participates in unit goal setting. Assists in cost-effective use of equipment and supplies.
Under the supervision of the licensed nurse, assists in providing direct patient care and completes delegated skills and task as ascribed by North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services.
Monitors the patient for signs of escalating behaviors. Alerts nurse if the patient exhibits risk of harming himself/herself or others. Maintains level of observation according to the patients plan of care and as ordered within medical record. Communicate effectively with the patient's care team including receiving report and providing meaningful handoff. Documents accurately on established workflows within the medical record. Provides hazard surveillance and reduces risk within the patient's physical environment. Engages patient appropriately in distraction activities as needed.
Minimum Requirements
High School or GED is preferred - or higher.
NAI listing with NC Department of Health and Human Services is required.
Experience in a comparable facility can only be substituted for NA I course by successful completion of challenge exam acceptable to the N.C. Department of Health and Human Services is required.
Current American Heart Association HeartSaver or higher certification is required.
De-escalation training (Non-violent crisis intervention or other de-escalation program adopted by ECU Health). If not current at the time of hire must complete within 90 days of employment and maintain without lapse during employment.
