Job summary

UNC Health in North Carolina is seeking a Nursing Assistant I to join the Float/Flex Pool as a Per Diem. The role may float to Chapel Hill, Hillsborough, and Butner campuses, with at least 36 hours every 6 weeks and shifts of 4–12 hours. Orientation is required biweekly.

The NA provides routine direct and indirect patient care under supervision, assists on multiple units, and supports patient stability and comfort from infancy to geriatrics. NC NA I license and BLS required.

Qualifications

• Licensed Nursing Assistant I per NC DHHS.
• BLS certification required.
• Preferred 6 months of nursing assistant experience.
• Fluent in English; basic computer skills.

Responsibilities

• Assist physicians with examinations and procedures and coordinate supplies during emergencies.
• Provide direct and indirect patient care under supervision of a licensed nurse.
• Record patient information and report changes promptly.
• Assist with admission, orientation, and discharge processes.
• Perform vital signs, measurements, specimen collection, wound care and ROM exercises.
• Support activities of daily living and transport patients and supplies.
• Reinforce patient teaching and distribute education materials.

The UNC Float/Flex Pool is seeking Nursing Assistants (Per Diem) to join their team. This position may float to the Medical Center in Chapel Hill, the Hospital at Hillsborough in Hillsborough, and the Youth Behavioral Hospital in Butner, North Carolina. Must be able to work a minimum of 36 hours in a 6-week scheduling period with preferred scheduling. Shifts can be 4, 8, 10 or 12 hours. There is a requirement for 2 weekend shifts and at least 1 12-hour or 2 8-hour night shifts every scheduling period. This position requires the ability to attend the required weeklong hospital orientation offered every two weeks. Orientation Schedule: Monday & Tuesday – Virtual with a 10am mandatory WebEx; Wednesday – 8am to 10am virtual and mandatory in person from 1pm to 5 pm. The UNC Float/Flex Pool is made up of approximately 300 RNs and NAs/CSTs. We float to all 75 units of the main campus (except the OR and NCCC) and Hillsborough campus to help staff when they are short-handed. This position can function as an NA I, floating throughout the hospital working as Personal Nurse Assistant giving one on one care or staffing on any unit in the hospital. Must be flexible and interested in caring for patients in all service areas from emergency department to critical care and all ages from infant to geriatrics. Our Nursing Assistant provides routine direct and indirect care in hospital setting, all work performed is under the direct supervision of a registered nurse or physician.

Responsibilities

• Assist physicians and other health care providers with routine examinations and procedures, as well as procurement of equipment and supplies during emergency situations.
• In the psychiatric setting, aids patients in reality orientation, participates in behavior modification plans/therapy, provides informal support therapy to patients/families, provides verbal de-escalation of potentially aggressive patients, aids in the physical management of aggressive/out-of-control patients, facilitates age appropriate play for children, and monitors the therapeutic milieu activities on assigned unit to ensure that emotional and safety needs of patients are met.
• Observes, collects, and documents patient information obtained while providing care and promptly report significant changes in the patient's condition to a registered nurse or physician.
• Provides assistance to patients and their families during admission to the clinical area, orientation to the hospital/clinic/home health experience, and discharge
• Provides care/ treatments to patients as outlined in plan of care including, but not limited to, the measurement of vital signs, height and weight, specimen collection, skin preps/scrubs, catheter care, capillary blood glucose checks, simple wound care, range of motion exercises, postural drainage, and supportive 11 patient and family interactions.
• Provides direct personal care to patients as outlined in plan of care for routine activities of daily living such as bathing, dressing, feeding and assisting with ambulation.
• Provides indirect care to patients and assigned area to include, but not limited to, cleaning the work area, changing linens, re-stocking supplies, cleaning/sterilizing instruments, transporting patients/ supplies/ specimens, assisting in the orientation of new employees and students, and some routine clerical functions.
• Reinforces routine teaching given to patients by the registered nurse or physician and document patient understanding of instructions. Distributes patient education materials at the request of patients and/or health care providers.

Education Requirements

• None required as long as all other position requirements are met.

Licensure/Certification Requirements

• Listed as Nursing Assistant I with the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification

Professional Experience Requirements

• Prefer six (6) months of nursing assistant experience

Knowledge/Skills/and Abilities Requirements

• Fluent in verbal and written English language and able to develop basic computer skills.
