The Nursing Assistant (NA) serves as caregiver to the resident during the scheduled work period in long‑term care. The role includes providing resident‑centered nursing care and daily living assistance to assigned residents under the supervision of a registered nurse (RN). The NA delivers age‑appropriate care related to the resident’s physical and psychological needs, follows infection prevention and control policies, and utilizes personal protective equipment. Responsibilities also encompass assisting with bathing, toileting, grooming, dressing, vital sign recording, and psychosocial support; assisting with transfers, repositioning, walking, and proper use of equipment; performing range‑of‑motion and passive exercises; preparing meals and creating a positive dining experience; collecting non‑invasive specimens; documenting resident interactions and outcomes; communicating changes in condition to charge nurses; providing housekeeping and laundry services; supporting wellness and recreational programs; and participating in committees and task forces as needed.
High school graduate or GED preferred, but not required. Minimum age of 16. Prior clinical or nursing assistant experience in long‑term care is preferred. Required Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) certification with the State Board of Nursing, or state‑certified CNA within four months of employment, or enrollment in a training program. CNA training and certification are provided by the facility. Candidates must satisfactorily complete yearly competency testing, maintain continuing‑education credits (minimum 12 hours annually), and keep all required certifications. May need registration with the Unlicensed Assistive Person (UAP) Registry, depending on state. In some facilities, the role may classify as a Sanford Category II Driver, requiring a valid driver’s license, vehicle report, and medical qualification per the Sanford Driving Policy.
