Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • 1 year of general healthcare experience.
  • 6 months as UPMC Nursing Assistant/CNA with PCT competency within 120 days.
  • Enrollment in PT/OT/PA program or related healthcare training with at least one clinical rotation completed.
  • Bachelor's degree in a health sciences field.
  • Completion of UPMC patient care technician class and basic information system training.
  • BLS/CPR certification per AHA standards within 30 days of hire.
  • EMT or Paramedic certification or enrollment preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with patient procedures and ADLs; support therapies; report changes to RN.
  • Perform core nursing assistant tasks: glucose monitoring, weights, vital signs, I&O, specimen collection.
  • Report equipment malfunctions; maintain professional relationships with staff.
  • Respond to call lights; pass meal trays; transport patients.
  • Document in medical records and perform clerical tasks as needed.
  • Achieve competency in advanced skills based on department need (phlebotomy, IV removal, EKG).

Job description

UPMC Hamot is hiring a full-time Patient Care Technician to join our 4 South Trauma unit!

Title and salary will be determined based upon education and experience.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist with patient procedures and ADLs, support physical, respiratory, and cardiopulmonary therapies, provide feedback to RN and report changes in patient status.
  • Perform core nursing assistant tasks: blood glucose monitoring, weights, vital signs, I&O, specimen collections, Foley care, plus at least four additional tasks (phlebotomy, 12-lead EKG, simple dressing, Foley catheter removal, point of care testing, bladder scan, straight catheter, IV catheter removal).
  • Report equipment malfunctions, communicate effectively with other departments, maintain professional and respectful relationships.
  • Respond to call lights and telephones, pass meal trays, transport patients.
  • Receive and act on feedback, identify and communicate learning needs, participate in self-review.
  • Provide instruction to patients and families under RN direction, apply, monitor, and remove patient restraints as per protocol.
  • Communicate clearly with healthcare team, understand cultural diversity, horizontal violence, and impairment in health professions, support workplace safety.
  • Follow all patient care and hospital policies, comply with safety policies and standard precautions.
  • Suggest and support departmental changes, assume responsibility for assignments, support department projects and quality initiatives.
  • Document in medical records as per procedures, perform clerical functions as needed.
  • Achieve and maintain competency in advanced skills based on department need (phlebotomy/venipuncture, peripheral IV removal, indwelling Foley catheter removal, basic arrhythmia, 12-lead EKG, NG tubes clamping and removal).
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Must have one of the following:
  • 1 year of general healthcare experience
  • 6 months as UPMC Nursing Assistant/CNA with PCT competency within 120 days of hire/transfer/promotion
  • Enrollment in PT/OT/PA program or related healthcare training with at least one clinical rotation completed
  • Bachelor's degree in a health sciences field
  • Successful completion of UPMC patient care technician class Successful completion of basic information system training
  • Microcomputer experience preferred Effective oral and written communication skills
  • EMT or Paramedic certification or enrollment in an EMT or Paramedic program preferred
  • Limited access to medications, only for distribution to the nurse Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire.
  • Act 34
  • ACLS preferred
