Job Description

The Certified Nursing Aide (CNA) functions under the direction of a licensed professional nurse (nurse). Under the supervision of the nurse, CNAs perform care appropriate to the patient population served and meet daily routine patient care needs. The CNA performs their duties based on the unit care delivery model. This role collaborates with the interdisciplinary team to deliver care as outlined by the nurse.

The CNA adheres to a culture reflective of Centra's best practices for quality and service, creates and maintains a safe patient environment, and contributes to a healthy work environment.

The CNA's practice reflects the laws and regulations for a Certified Nurse Aide as outlined by the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Responsibilities
  • Provides and documents patient care under the direction of the registered or licensed practical nurse and as outlined in the plan of care. This includes assisting with activities of daily living such as meals, bathing, ambulating, toileting, and repositioning, as well as monitoring vital signs and documenting intake and output.
  • Promotes patient comfort by responding to call lights and communicating patient needs to the nursing staff.
  • Contributes to a safe admission, transfer, and discharge process.
  • Maintains patient rights to comfort, privacy, and dignity.
  • Creates and maintains a clean and safe environment that protects patients from harm.
  • Follows organizational policies and procedures in care delivery and interactions.
  • May handle medication delivery and transport as applicable.
  • Applies unit service excellence practices in interactions with patients, visitors, physicians, and colleagues.
  • Uses resources efficiently.
  • Participates in quality and performance improvement initiatives, providing care that complies with regulations and standards.
  • Practices safety behaviors consistently.
  • Handles conflict resolution appropriately and timely.
  • Engages in professional development activities.

May perform other duties as assigned or requested; job specifications are subject to change.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Successful completion of a state-approved Nurse Aide education program.
  • Certification as a Nurse Aide by the Virginia Department of Health Professions.
  • CPR certification (AHA BLS).
Preferred Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or GED.
Additional Roles
Certified Nursing Aide – Resource Team / Internal Travel Team

REQUIRED: At least 1 year of recent acute care experience.

Certified Nursing Aide – Stroobants

REQUIRED: 1 year of CNA experience; Valid Virginia Driver’s License. PREFERRED: Cardiology experience.

Certified Nursing Aide – Home Health

Functions under RN, PT, Speech, and OT supervision. Provides personal care, simple procedures, and medication assistance. Must report changes and document care. Requires at least 1 year of CNA experience and a Virginia Driver’s License. Travel expected at 100%.

Certified Nursing Aide – Hospice

Under RN, PT, Speech, and OT supervision. Requires at least 1 year of CNA experience and preferably hospice or homecare experience. Travel expected at 100%.
