GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES

Performs paraprofessional work in home health, clinics, or community outreach programs in a local health department. Assignments are primarily in the areas of personal care and educational outreach under professional supervision, yet some incidental transportation services may be performed. Work involves assisting in setting up clinics, aiding physicians with examinations, ordering supplies, and other similar duties as assigned.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

Employees are assigned throughout the Divisions of Adult Health, Family Planning/Maternity, and Child Health. Work is limited in complexity, but does include a variety of basic home health care and simple mechanical nursing assignments. Outreach work involves canvassing low-income neighborhoods to provide families with basic information on available health services or clinic hours, and to encourage proper health care. Employee may be assigned to more than one clinic site or to community outreach.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Essential Duties and Tasks

•Provides assistance to clinic nursing and medical staff in providing comprehensive health care services.
•Directs patients to the clinic areas, obtains height, weight, temperature and pulse; records accurately in medical records.
•Provides vision screens, hearing screens, and collects specimens for lab according to standards.
•Maintains inventory of supplies and assures clinics are properly stocked.
•Assures that all examining rooms are set up correctly pre and post clinic. Restores examining rooms post clinics.
•Makes home visits to follow up on broken appointments and to assess the welfare of patients and home situation.
•Monitors, records, and reports vital signs of homebound care patients. Provides basic health hygiene bathing, shaving, and skin care.
•Visits local agencies and industries leaving educational information about health services provided.
•Attends in-services programs, workshops, and seminars as assigned.

RECRUITMENT STANDARDS
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

•Working knowledge of applicable supportive mechanical acts and/or sanitation and personal hygiene.
•Basic knowledge of social, economic, and environmental conditions of clients to be served.
•Ability to establish rapport and relate to population served and a variety of service disciplines (nurses, doctors, social workers).
•Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
•Ability to record basic data.
•Ability to perform required physical tasks.
•Ability to learn basic lab techniques such as urinalysis, hemoglobin, hematocrit.

Minimum Qualifications

High school graduation or equivalent and at least one year of experience in performing similar tasks in a hospital, clinic, nursing home, medical corps, or other medical treatment program.

Necessary Special Qualification

Must be listed with the NC Board of Facility Services as a Certified Nurses Aide (CNA).

Physical Demands and Work Conditions

Sits, walks, and stands during a workday. Must be able to physically perform the basic life support functions of walking, fingering, grasping, talking, hearing and repetitive motions.
Periodically, may be required to lift patients (children) and objects up to 30 pounds as required for some positions.
Must have the visual acuity to record observations and physical assessments of clients, to read and record documentation for medical records.


May Require Driving
This position may require driving for this position whether driving a County owned or personal vehicle to conduct county business such as but not limited to attending conferences, meetings, or any other county related functions. Motor Vehicle Reports may be verified for valid driver's license and that the driving record is compatible with the county's driving criteria.
If a personal vehicle is operated for county business proper insurance is maintained as per Guilford County's vehicle use policy.
