Job description

Nursery Coordinator, Salem UMC Irmo, SC – PT

Salem United Methodist Church is seeking an energetic individual committed to providing dependable, safe, secure, and nurturing care to its children. The Nursery Coordinator’s principal duties and responsibilities are as follows:

  • Provide age-appropriate care, which includes: feeding, changing diapers, escorting to the bathroom, maintaining a safe environment, putting children down for naps, holding, or sitting with and cheerfully interacting with children through games, stories, play and prayer.
  • Greet each child and call him or her by name when dropped off by parents/guardians, giving parents a sense of trust while they are attending church activities and events. Build a strong rapport with parents.
  • Engage children in organized activities while staying in the nursery, i.e. age-appropriate songs, stories, lessons, crafts, etc.
  • Work with other nursery workers in harmony at all times.
  • Tidy the room and clean/sanitize/disinfect any toys/beds before leaving.
  • Maintain good hand-washing and hygiene practices (before/after feedings, diaper changes and after assisting children with tissues for coughs, sneezes, or runny noses).
  • Ensure all children’s cups are labeled with child’s name and try to ensure that children drink from their own cup.
  • Ensure safety of the nursery environment, i.e. cleaning products and medications stored out of reach of children.
  • Arrive at least 15 minutes prior to nursery opening and stay until all children are secured with a responsible adult or until worship service has concluded, whichever is the latter.
  • Work holidays that fall on Sunday and may be asked to work additional hours during special services.
  • Communicate in advance, by phone or email, to appropriate staff member any planned absences or the need for additional nursery staffing.
  • Abide by Safe Sanctuary Policies set by the church.
  • Refrain from cell phone usage while in the nursery, except in the case of an emergency.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Education

High school diploma or GED equivalent

Knowledge & Skills

  • At least 18 years of age
  • Experience in caring for children between the ages of 0 and 3, with the ability to adapt and interact with a variety of personalities.
  • Teaching experience preferred but not mandatory
  • Must present the results of a current (within one year) Tuberculin test and current immunizations
  • Must have reliable transportation
  • Must demonstrate excellent interpersonal skills, especially dealing with parents and children in a professional manner
  • Must be certified in basic first aid, including child/infant CPR training (or must be willing to become certified) and should keep certification current
  • Must satisfactorily complete nationwide criminal background check and reference check
  • Must be dependable in reporting to work
  • Must dress appropriately
  • Must fulfill all requirements of Safe Sanctuary Program
  • Ability to take universal precautions while changing diapers or dealing with bodily fluids
  • Working hours will vary (approximately 3 hrs/week).
  • Benefits are set by the Staff-Parish Relations Committee (SPRC) for part-time employees.
  • Salary is set annually in the church budget.
