Job description

*Supports independent nursing practice of professional nurses through collaborative, consultative, and role modeling activities.

*Analyzes clinical and non-clinical variables to influence, supervise, manage, or oversee patient care needs and predict and manage responses.

*Provides expert consultation within their specialty area at the unit, program, service, administrative, and community level(s), including, but not limited to, the Boston practices, networks, and satellites.

*Identifies current trends in health care and their implications for nursing practice.

*Promotes the attainment of the goals of the patient/family plan of care.

*Applies new technology, nursing theories, research findings, and experiential knowledge to improve patient/family health care outcomes and to assist in the development of nursing practice as applicable.

*Responds to changes in clinical practice by planning, designing, implementing, and evaluating guidelines, protocols, and standards in collaboration with clinicians and other members of the health care team.

*Identifies and recommends interventions regarding ethical issues in patient/family care and guides staff and other providers in applying ethical concepts to address patient care issues.

*Applies innovative approaches to solving complex problems.

*Acts as a resource to colleagues, patient/families, and others as identified.

*Analyzes and evaluates the effectiveness of the consultative process.

*Provides direct patient care as applicable.

*Initiates, facilitates, coordinates, and manages interdisciplinary collaboration to provide direct care of the patient and family.

*Education - Plans and delivers relevant staff and patient education to nurses and other members of the health care team regarding the patient and family plan of care.

*Identifies learning needs and develops and implements programs for patient education within the area of specialization.

*Supports, participates, and contributes to educational programs for clinical and support staff both locally and organization-wide.

*Facilitates the acquisition of advanced clinical skills in staff nurses and students through role modeling, practice, and consultation in the clinical setting.

*Research and Evidence-Based Practice - Actively participates in research and evidence-based practice activities to positively affect patient care and outcomes.

*Uses nursing theories, research findings, and evidence-based practice to plan, design, evaluate nursing practice, and generate researchable clinical problems.

*Promotes staff and student utilization of the research process.

*Participates in and supports research activities.

*Utilizes scientific methods in collecting data on clinical practice issues.

*Initiates, participates in, and continually evaluates quality assurance and performance improvement activities related to clinical practice, identifying opportunities for improvement, designing and planning programs, and implementing them in the clinical environment.

Experience
Clinical nursing experience 1-3 years required

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Familiarity with principles and skills needed for practical nursing to provide patient care and treatment.
- Knowledgeable of the care required by respective age groups for which care is being provided.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and secure sensitive information.
- Knowledge of medical terminology.
- Excellent verbal and communication skills.
- Ability to accurately screen and triage acute patients.

The IV Therapy team at MGH is a highly skilled group of nursing professionals who provide key clinical services to our patients.

Members of the health care team collaborate to achieve the universal goal of safe, effective, and appropriate infusion therapy and vascular access.

Nurses perform independent interventions related to infusion therapy and vascular access using clinical reasoning, judgment, and decision-making skills.

Primary response team for vascular access needs, including intraosseous insertions during rapid responses and codes.

RN's are highly valued by the staff nurses whom they support and partner with.

In 1940, MGH's Ada Plumer was the first nurse to become an IV Therapist to perform intravenous cannulation.
