Glendale Elementary School District – Nurse – RN

Purpose Statement

The job of Nurse – RN is to oversee the individual health needs of students; implement health care plans directed by physicians; provide immediate care for ill, medically fragile and/or injured students and/or staff; and identify health problems for referral and follow‑up treatment.

Other Functions
  • Administer first aid, medication, and specialized medical treatment (e.g., cauterizations, blood sugar tests) for ill, medically fragile and/or injured children.
  • Assess situations involving students’ and staff’s health‑related issues, safety, and abuse (e.g., physical, sexual, drug) to identify problems, refer for proper treatment, and comply with legal requirements.
  • Collaborate with parents, students, staff, health care providers, and other agencies to promote needed treatment, secure information, and comply with legal requirements.
  • Conduct health screenings (hearing, vision, immunization compliance, height/weight ratios) to promote treatment and meet legal standards.
  • Implement school health care plans directed by health professionals and communicate plans to appropriate staff.
  • Maintain the health office (inventory, supplies, filing) to ensure availability of items.
  • Maintain student health records (manual and computerized) – immunization history, medication logs, contact logs – to document activities and meet mandated requirements.
  • Monitor health care plans to address students’ health needs and implement directions from parents and/or physicians.
  • Participate in emergency drills (lockdowns, safety meetings, evacuation plans, crisis team) to provide health‑related expertise.
  • Attend meetings, workshops, and seminars including IEP to share information and improve skills/knowledge.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned to ensure efficient and effective operation of the unit.
  • Prepare written materials (medication logs, compliance reports, student activities) to document activities and convey information.
  • Report incidents (fights, suspected child abuse, substance abuse) and contagious diseases among students/staff to maintain safety and adhere to policies.
  • Respond to emergency situations to address immediate health and safety concerns.
  • Teach students and staff in‑service lessons on medical procedures, hygiene, flu, blood‑borne pathogens, etc., to maintain good health and provide education.
Job Requirements: Minimum Qualifications
Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

Skills required: adhering to safety practices; administering first aid and CPR; operating standard office equipment and relevant software; operating healthcare equipment; and preparing and maintaining accurate records.

Knowledge required: basic math (fractions, percents, ratios); reading technical information; composing documents; facilitating group discussions; analyzing situations to define issues and draw conclusions; medication side effects/reactions; childhood diseases; physical assessments; specialized treatments; first aid/CPR.

Abilities required: scheduling activities/meetings; gathering and collating data; using job‑related equipment; flexibility to work independently and with others; operating equipment using standardized methods; working with diverse individuals and groups; solving problems independently; interpreting guidelines; handling frequent interruptions; establishing and maintaining effective relationships, especially with school‑age children; displaying tact and courtesy; adapting to changing priorities; communicating with diverse groups; maintaining confidentiality; working as part of a team.

Responsibilities

Working under limited supervision following standardized practices and/or methods; leading, guiding, and/or coordinating others; tracking budget expenditures; utilizing resources from other work units; impacting the organization’s services significantly.

Work Environment

Physical demands include occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling; frequent stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling; and fine finger dexterity. The job requires approximately 40% sitting, 30% walking, and 30% standing, and may involve exposure to injury or illness.

Experience, Education, and Credentials

Experience: Job‑related experience within a specialized field is required.

Education: Bachelor’s degree in a related field.

Licenses and Certifications: Valid RN license; CPR certification; other required certificates and clearances; IVP Fingerprint Clearance Card.

Compensation

Exempt – Salary Grade 1.
