COTTONWOOD OAK CREEK SCHOOL DISTRICT NURSE

START DATE: July 1, 2025

HOURS OF WORK: Full-time; 10 months (193 days)

STARTING SALARY: starting at $52,000 depending on experience

CLASS TITLE: SCHOOL DISTRICT NURSE

CLASSIFICATION: Exempt

JOB GOAL:

The Public School Nurse promotes student health, manages chronic conditions, and addresses acute medical concerns to support academic success. The nurse collaborates with educators, families, and healthcare professionals to ensure students' physical and emotional well-being in accordance with Arizona Department of Health Services (ADHS) and local school district policies.

Perform duties as directed by district administration.

Minimum Qualifications

Education, Licensure, Experience, Clearances and Certification:

  • Bachelor degreed registered nurse with a valid Arizona State Board of Nursing License in good standing
  • Current CPR certification
  • Current Arizona Fingerprint Clearance Card
  • Maintain Arizona driver's license
  • Able to work independently.
  • Such other qualifications as the district governing board finds desirable and acceptable.
Purpose
  • Maximize the quantity of in-class time by reducing the incidence of health-related absenteeism
  • Eliminate or minimize health problems which impair learning
  • Promote the highest degree of independent functioning possible
  • Promote student, staff, and community awareness of and participation in healthy behaviors
  • Deliver health care for students with acute or chronic health problems.
Key Responsibilities

Direct Health Services

  • Provide direct healthcare services including first aid, medication administration, emergency care, and chronic condition support.
  • Deliver emergency medical care to students and staff as needed.

Chronic and Individualized Health Care Planning

  • Develop and implement care plans for students with chronic health conditions such as asthma, diabetes, and epilepsy.
  • Write and manage individualized school health plans (ISHP), emergency care plans (ECP), transportation health care plans, and 504 plans.
  • Participate in IEP/504 team meetings when health services are involved.

Health Records Management & Compliance

  • Maintain accurate, up-to-date, and confidential student health records using district-approved software.
  • Audit immunization records for compliance with Arizona state law and notify parents/guardians of deficiencies.
  • Ensure compliance with district and state policies related to medication administration.

Health Screenings & Referrals

  • Conduct regular health screenings (vision, hearing, scoliosis) and provide referrals for further evaluation or treatment.
  • Supervise and administer other mandated screenings.

Health Education & Training

  • Serve as a health resource for students, parents, and staff.
  • Prepare and distribute health and safety information.
  • Train school staff in basic medical procedures, including EpiPen use and seizure protocol response.

Public Health & Disease Management

  • Implement communicable disease control protocols and report communicable diseases to the Arizona Department of Health Services (ADHS) as required.
  • Monitor community health trends and alert school administration to relevant issues.

Collaboration & Crisis Response

  • Work collaboratively with teachers, administrators, and external healthcare providers to support student health.
  • Participate on school crisis response, safety, and behavioral health teams.
  • Contact parents or conduct home visits when necessary to address student health needs.

Administrative & Program Support

  • Assist in researching and improving school health programs and services.
  • Maintain adequate inventory of medical supplies and ensure timely ordering and restocking.
  • Collect and analyze health-related data to guide evidence-based practices.
  • Record and report on all nursing services and student interactions clearly and accurately.

ADA and Other Requirements:

Positions of this type typically require: ability to lift and carry supplies and materials weighing up to 20 pounds, stooping, kneeling, walking, pushing, reaching, lifting, repetitive motions.

HAZARDS:

  • Contact with blood and other body fluids.
  • Potential for contact with bloodborne pathogens and communicable diseases.

Job performance will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board's policy on Evaluation of Support Staff Personnel.
