Job summary

SMG System Medical Group seeks a Nurse Practitioner – Trauma Services for WVU Medicine: Wheeling Hospital's Critical Care and Trauma Institute. The role focuses on comprehensive, patient-centered care in the inpatient/critical care setting, including preoperative workups and interpretation of diagnostic tests.

The NP will collaborate with Critical Care and surgical teams, develop individualized care plans, mentor staff, and participate in rounds while ensuring efficient transitions and adherence

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Nursing from a CCNE-accredited program.
  • National Certification by one of the recognized APRN Certification Centers.
  • Licensure or eligibility for licensure as RN and APRN in West Virginia.
  • AHA BLS certification with ACLS/ATLS as required by department.
  • FNP/ACNP certification required or willing to obtain within first credentialing cycle.
  • New graduates eligible for consideration.
  • Acute/critical care experience preferred.

Job Overview

WVU Medicine: Wheeling Hospital's Critical Care and Trauma Institute is seeking a Nurse Practitioner – Trauma Services.

Responsibilities
  • Manages comprehensive and individualized care for patients and families in the Inpatient/Critical Care phase of hospitalization.
  • With the collaboration of Critical Care or by following established protocols, orders additional tests or consults to complete the preoperative and/or pre-procedure workup.
  • Performs, interprets and communicates results of common diagnostic tests.
  • Consults and communicates with Critical Care and surgical services regarding abnormal findings in the evaluations of patients.
  • Develops a comprehensive individualized plan of care for patients that includes teaching, discharge planning and necessary referral to other members of the health care team.
  • Participates in physician/team rounds.
  • Identifies unstable or complex patient care situations and facilitates appropriate intervention with appropriate resources.
  • Recognizes emergency situations and initiates effective emergency care.
  • Demonstrates critical thinking and diagnostic reasoning skills in clinical decision making by the identification, evaluation and management of the individual needs of patients/families.
  • Demonstrates the ability to utilize basic equipment in a safe manner.
  • Facilitates patient discharge/transfer by coordination of appropriate services.
  • Bases decisions made/actions taken on relevant scientific principles, established standards of care and/or research findings.
  • Promotes an environment that facilitates learning by responding to appropriate patient/family preferences, priorities and readiness to learn.
  • Updates own knowledge base throughout the year.
  • Completes all identified clinical competencies.
  • Mentors nursing personnel in all levels of clinical practice.
  • Communicates effectively with patients/families, physicians and ancillary services at all levels to assure coordinated efficient patient care.
  • Documents the plan of care, interventions and evaluations in a clear and concise manner.
  • Adheres to the established Performance Expectations for WVU-UHA Employees in the areas of People, Service, Performance Improvement, and Shared Values & Culture.
  • Performs initial assessment and develops plan for new admissions in conjunction with the critical care attending physician.
  • Ensures patient summary (i.e., Problem List) and orders are current.
  • Ensures appropriate transition to next team when patient is ready to leave the ICU.
  • Performs appropriate procedures as directed by Critical Care Team and within scope of practice.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Graduate from a CCNE accredited nursing program with Master's Degree in Nursing.
  • National Certification by one of the recognized APRN Certification Centers.
  • Licensure or eligibility for licensure, as a professional Registered Nurse and Advanced Practice Registered Nurse in West Virginia.
  • American Heart Association BLS Certification required with additional Advanced Life Support training at the discretion of the department.
  • Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) certification.
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification.
  • FNP ACGNP certification or ACNP required, but would consider FNP willing to complete either certification within first full credentialing cycle.
  • Eligible new graduates will be considered.
  • Acute care, critical care experience preferred.
Physical Requirements
  • Work requires strength and/or stamina, lifting, moving, stooping, reaching, positioning of patients, standing, walking, moving of patients, materials and equipment weighing 40+ pounds.
