Summary

The Advanced Practice Nurse (APN) Ill Certified Nurse Practitioner (NP) practices in Surgical Service to provide a full range of services emphasizing quality, timeliness, and the advancement of the Veterans Affairs (VA) mission. The NP provides advanced clinical practice, consultation, and management. For Physician Assistant application, visit this link.

Qualifications

Basic Requirements:

  1. English Language Proficiency: In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7403(f), no person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless proficient in basic written and spoken English.
  2. Education: Graduate of an approved school of professional nursing by ACEN or CCNE. Alternatively, individuals in a master's level bridge program with equivalent coursework, or graduates of foreign schools with current registration and degree validation, meet the requirements.
  3. Current licensure: Full, active, and unrestricted registration as a professional nurse in a US State, Territory, or District of Columbia.
  4. Additional notes: Candidates without licensure may be appointed as a Graduate Nurse Technician (GNT) temporarily while pursuing licensure.

Physical Requirements: The incumbent must perform all activities without restrictions, including standing, walking, stooping, bending, reaching, lifting, and climbing stairs.

Duties
  • The NP is a licensed independent practitioner with advanced education and certification, providing evidence-based care for a patient population.
  • Independently manages a panel of patients with acute and chronic conditions, focusing on health promotion and disease prevention.
  • Develops and implements individualized health plans.
  • Demonstrates leadership and collaborates with interdisciplinary teams.
  • Orders, interprets labs, tests, and diagnostics.
  • Prescribes pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic interventions.
  • Initiates referrals to specialists.
  • Provides patient and family education.
  • Adjusts care plans to optimize outcomes.
