The Nurse Practitioner is responsible for providing management oversight of the health clinic at the National Institute of Standards & Technology (NIST). Responsibilities include performing physical exams, providing direct patient care such as first aid and routine inquiries, ergonomic assessments, administering immunizations and vaccines, and assisting with other occupational health services as needed.
Responsibilities
- Serve as the NIST Medical Officer.
- Consult with NIST Management on occupational medicine matters.
- Practice clinical medicine, including emergency, diagnostic, and preventive health care services such as physical exams, emergency medical treatment, health screening programs, occupational health surveillance, and health counseling. Must have proficiency in EKG and pulmonary function testing, and be able to provide cardiac emergency care following ACLS guidelines, including advanced procedures like external pacing, IV access, medication administration, intubation, and defibrillation. Wound care including suturing is also required.
- Perform physical examinations such as fitness for duty, pre-employment, and DOT exams.
- Evaluate and provide opinions on fitness-for-duty exams, pre-employment physicals, and occupational injury/illness claims; collaborate with referral physicians to reconcile OWCP cases.
- Provide consultation and review medical documents regarding employee requests for reasonable accommodations and advise on employment barriers.
- Assess the health services provided by the NIST Health Unit and recommend improvements.
- Advise NIST staff on occupational health concerns related to research projects.
- Coordinate with other medical professionals for fitness for duty and accommodations.
- Support NIST-EAP programs for issues like substance abuse and emotional stress.
- Coordinate activities with the NIST Fire Department.
- Participate in NIST committees as needed to influence internal policy.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) or Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) from an accredited program.
- At least three (3) years recent experience as a Nurse Practitioner.
- Current Nurse Practitioner license in Maryland.
- Valid CPR and ACLS certifications.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Ability to obtain certifications in Occupational Health, Acute Care, or Emergency within six months.
- DOT certification within 60 days.
- Experience with venipuncture, EKGs, pulmonary testing, audiometry, and vision exams.
- Effective communication skills with patients and healthcare providers.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
Physical Demands
- Ability to sit, talk, hear, and perform repetitive motions such as using hands and wrists.
- Occasional walking, standing, climbing, bending, stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling.
- Ability to lift up to 25 pounds occasionally.
- Specific vision requirements include close vision.
