Job summary

Ochsner Health in New Orleans seeks an Advanced Practice Provider to work collaboratively with residents, fellows, attendings, and staff caring for outpatient clinic patients. Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in nursing is required.
  • Bachelor’s degree in PA/Health Sciences or PA program graduate is required.
  • Current APRN license in state of practice is required.
  • Family NP or Adult/Geriatric NP certification preferred.
  • PA license with NCCPA certification; BLS/ACLS certification required or eligible.

Responsibilities

  • Provide primary and urgent medical management for outpatient clinic patients.
  • Stabilize critically ill patients in emergencies.
  • Teach residents and medical students, staff development.
  • Educate patients and families; participate in discharge planning.
  • Adapt care to patient population while maintaining privacy and respectful communication.

Job Summary

This role works collaboratively with residents, fellows, attendings, and other staff caring for outpatient clinic patients. Duties are performed under the supervision of the Medical Director or an approved staff physician and in partnership with PCCs, staff nurses, and discharge coordinators. Key responsibilities include primary and urgent medical management, emergency stabilization of critically ill patients, teaching residents and medical students, staff development, patient education, and discharge planning.

Key Responsibilities
  • Utilize the approved medical practices process in delivering all patient care.
  • Provide care based on physical, psycho/social, educational, and safety criteria appropriate to patients’ ages.
  • Maintain an attitude of inquiry toward medical practices and patient care outcomes, and may develop research methodology.
  • Provide education to patient families, staff, other health professionals, and the community.
  • Adapt behavior to the specific patient population, including respecting privacy, choosing appropriate introduction methods, and tailoring communication of services or procedures.
  • Perform other related duties as required.
  • Remain knowledgeable on current federal, state, and local laws, accreditation standards, and regulatory agency requirements, ensuring compliance.
Qualifications
Education
  • Master’s degree in nursing (Required)
  • Bachelor’s degree in Physician Assistant medicine or Health Sciences, or graduate of an approved Physician Assistant Training Program (Required)
Work Experience
  • None (Required); Preferred – 3 years of related working experience.
Certifications
  • Current License as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) in the state of practice (Required)
  • Family Nurse Practitioner or Adult/Geriatric Nurse Practitioner certified by ANCC or AANPCP (Required)
  • License as a Physician Assistant in the state of practice and NCCPA Certified; Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) / Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification from the American Heart Association (Required)
  • Prescriptive Authority in the state of practice as outlined by the State Board of Medical Examiners or State Board of Nursing (Eligible)
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)
  • Computer skills and dexterity for data entry and job information retrieval.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills with clear professional presentation.
  • Proficiency with Windows-style applications and role-specific software packages.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Working knowledge of Advanced Practice Provider policies and protocols at departmental and system levels.
  • Reliable transportation for travel across facilities.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule (24/7, weekend, holiday, on-call).
Physical and Environmental Demands

Medium work: occasional lifting of 20‑50 pounds, frequent lifting of 10‑25 pounds, and occasional lifting of ≤10 pounds as needed. Must stand for prolonged periods and stoop, bend, reach, and grab with arms and hands. Routine duties may involve exposure to blood, body fluids, and tissues. Work occurs in a patient care area with potential exposure to communicable diseases and hazardous medications or waste. Reasonable accommodations can be made for disabilities.
