Job description

Nurse Practitioner / Physician Assistant – Neurosurgery Clinic, University Medical Center, New Orleans (Full-time Day Shift)

The Nurse Practitioner/Physician Assistant outpatient is responsible for providing medical care and treatment to patients. Performs physical examinations and preventative health measures within the prescribed guidelines and instructions of the physician. Plans a treatment strategy to meet identified needs and evaluates responses to nursing and medical interventions. The Neurosurgery Clinic provides a combination of outpatient and inpatient care, working with Dr. Young Lee and other Neurosurgery attendings at UMCNO. Clinical practice includes the full scope of an APP’s practice: bedside clinical care, documentation, procedures, professional billing, etc. Prior experience as a Neurosurgery provider is preferred.

Responsibilities
Patient Care
  • Provides quality care to patients.
  • Promptly responds to patient calls and messages ensuring same day completion.
  • Manges accurate patient and business records including encounter completion.
  • Observes patients for signs and symptoms of abuse/neglect and reports immediately per policy.
  • Recognizes emergencies and responds appropriately following organizational policy and procedure.
  • Coordinates plans of care, reviews periodically, and implements measures to maintain quality of care under constant surveillance.
Compliance
  • Stays abreast of all responsibilities required under federal and state laws, statutes, or regulations.
  • Maintains confidentiality of all patient information in accordance with HIPAA policies and procedures.
  • Maintains required continuing education hours to assure continued competence.
Professionalism and Support
  • Demonstrates professional ownership and commitment to the principles and core values of guest relations.
  • Demonstrates leadership of the clinical team.
  • Communicates with clinic leadership, escalates issues, and presents solutions.
Safety and Infection Control Standards
  • Assists with compliance to safety, environmental, infection control, quality improvement, and other regulatory standards.
  • Implements standard and transmission-based precautions as outlined in policies.
  • Performs hand hygiene as outlined in relevant policy.
  • Ensures patient safety during clinic visits in accordance with appropriate policy.
  • Maintains a clean clinic working environment.
  • Reports any safety hazards or violations to clinic manager or designee.
Collaboration
  • Provides input in hiring, disciplinary action, and termination decisions of clinical personnel.
  • Attends all daily huddles, staff meetings, and provider meetings.
  • Participates in ongoing performance improvement activities and initiatives.
Education and Qualifications
  • Master's Degree from an approved NP Program required or completion of an accredited Physician Assistant Program (MS-PAS).
Licenses and Certifications
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) from American Heart Association.
  • Registered Nursing License (RN) from the Louisiana State Board of Nursing.
  • Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) from the Louisiana State Board of Nursing or Current PA License in the State of Louisiana from the Louisiana State Board of Medical Examiners PA (Certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA)).
