Duke University is seeking a compassionate Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner to join the Hematologic Malignancy and Cellular Therapy outpatient team at the Blood Cancer Center in Durham, NC. The role focuses on patient care across cancer treatment, including documentation and collaboration with physicians and APP colleagues.

The successful candidate will have NP or PA training with state licensure, BLS, and a willingness to work in a team-based clinic environment.

Qualifications

  • For Nurse Practitioners: Completion of an accredited NP program with a Master’s degree.
  • For Physician Assistants: Completion of an accredited PA program; Bachelor’s required, Master’s preferred.
  • BLS certification required; ACLS preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Promote and maintain high standards of patient care across cancer care continuum.
  • Take thorough histories and perform physical exams.
  • Order diagnostic imaging and tests to guide diagnoses and toxicity management.
  • Develop treatment plans with clinical judgment and appropriate medications.
  • Document progress with accurate health records and participate in clinical research.

Job Summary

We are seeking a compassionate, qualified Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner to join our Hematologic Malignancy and Cellular Therapy outpatient team to care for patients with Blood Cancers.

Job Duties & Responsibilities
  • Promote and maintain high standards of patient care throughout the continuum of cancer diagnosis.
  • Elicit detailed and accurate patient histories and perform physical examinations.
  • Order appropriate diagnostic imaging and tests to determine medical and post‑treatment diagnoses, patient conditions, and treatment toxicities.
  • Formulate appropriate treatment plans with critical thinking skills and high‑level clinical judgement including prescribing appropriate medications.
  • Chart patient progress maintaining detailed and accurate health records.
  • Participate in clinical research projects and understand the importance of documenting toxicities and data collection.
  • Communicate among multi‑disciplinary teams to support patient care.
  • Collaborate, support, and build strong relationships with supervising and backup supervising physicians, APP colleagues, and team members.
  • Participate in the education of patients, family members, new staff, students, and other learners.
  • See scheduled and unscheduled patients.
  • Perform procedures including:
    • Bone Marrow Biopsies
    • Lumbar Puncture with and without intrathecal chemotherapy
    • Ommaya Access with and without intrathecal chemotherapy
    • Punch skin biopsy with simple suture.
  • Attend program‑required meetings.
  • Maintain up‑to‑date clinical and professional knowledge via approved CME.
  • Protect patient confidentiality, maintain ethics and abide by North Carolina laws and Duke Health System policies.
  • Maintain institutional requirements for compliance.

Job Eligibility Requirements
Education
  • For Nurse Practitioners: Completion of an accredited Nurse Practitioner program with a Master’s degree in Nursing.
  • For Physician Assistants: Completion of an accredited Physician Assistant program. A Bachelor’s degree is required; a Master’s degree is strongly preferred.
Certification
  • Physician Assistant Certification.
  • Nurse Practitioner Licensure and Certification.
  • Licensed in the State of North Carolina.
  • BLS required.
  • ACLS preferred.
License
  • NP: Must have unrestricted RN licensure issued by or recognized by the NCBON with authorization to practice as an NP.
  • PA: Must have unrestricted medical license issued by NCMB with authorization to practice as a PA.
  • Both: DEA independent license with prescriptive authority.
Experience
  • 1+ years of APP experience strongly preferred.
Job Hours

Monday‑Friday, day shift 8 a‑5 p, with flexibility to meet clinic needs.
