The Pediatric Heart Center is subspecialty service line that specializes in the care of children with acquired and congenital cardiac disease. Surgeries and procedures include palliation and repair of complex congenital heart defects. Medical interventions include management of acute/chronic heart failure, cardiogenic shock, renal and respiratory failure. In our cardiac intensive care unit critically ill children are cared for by a dedicated team with expertise in mechanical ventilation, inhaled nitric oxide, ventricular assist devices, temporary pacemaker therapy, continuous renal replacement therapy and hemodialysis.

The Pediatric Cardiac Intensive Care Unit (PCICU) is an 18 bed unit that specializes in the care of children with complex congenital cardiac disease. Surgical procedures include repair of congenital heart defects and permanent pacemaker insertion. Medical interventions include management of acute/chronic heart failure, septic shock, renal and respiratory failure. Critically ill children are cared for with such treatment modalities as mechanical ventilation, inhaled nitric oxide, ventricular assist devices, temporary pacemaker therapy, peritoneal dialysis, continuous renal replacement therapy and acute hemodialysis.

This position is shared position between PCICU and Pediatric Cardiac Anesthesia. There will be variable time commitment between the two programs depending on the operational needs of the PCICU and Pediatric Cardiac Anesthesia. The aspect of the Pediatric Cardiac Anesthesia position is shared with an approximately 50/50 split with another APP and the remaining hours will be within the PCICU. Shift hours will vary between 8-12 hours.

While assigned to work in the Pediatric Cardiac Anesthesia department, the Nurse Practitioner will deliver comprehensive health care under the supervision of an attending Pediatric Cardiac Anesthesiologist. The NP will collaborate with the Cardiac Anesthesia team and multiple other specialty services to coordinate and support the safety of surgical and non-surgical anesthesia for infants and children with congenital cardiac conditions. The Nurse Practitioner will participate in case management assessment, planning, teaching, and evaluation. The Nurse Practitioner will function as an associate of the staff Pediatric Cardiac Anesthesiologist in the delivery of care to infants and children with congenital and acquired heart disease throughout UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital.

Role Will Include

  • Management of critically ill patients in the PCICU with the critical care team when on service in the ICU (2) Assist in the clinical care of patients with congenital and acquired heart disease undergoing anesthesia in all clinical areas throughout the medical center (3) Manages resource allocation and scheduling of cases that require anesthesia (4) Works closely with multispecialty physician teams on complex care management (5) Coordinates multispecialty physician teams for complex cases, facilitating integration of all services (6) Evaluates patients independently in the clinic and inpatient areas. (7) Manages consult requests and resource allocation for pediatric cardiac anesthesia. (8). Collaborates with pediatric anesthesiologists, pediatric cardiologists, cardiac surgeons, and CICU intensivists on the perioperative management of all cardiac patients. (9) Documents all patient encounters in the electronic medical record thoroughly and at the time of care (10) Assesses needs of families and patients and makes appropriate referrals. (11). Follows established protocols and consults with the pediatric anesthesiologist as required when ordering medication and diagnostic tests. (12). Attends and participates in daily, weekly, and monthly case discussions and conferences (13). Ensure accuracy and timeliness of data entry into databases and works with database managers to produce meaningful reports to improve operations and clinical practice. (14) Analyzes issues and synthesizes data to lead relevant quality and process improvement initiatives. Supports established organizational quality improvement initiatives. (15) Functions as a liaison to all perioperative services throughout the medical center

Inpatient and outpatient responsibilities will occur initially at the Mission Bay campus however the Cardiac Anesthesia role will also extend to the Oakland campus.

The Pediatric Cardiac Nurse Practitioner will act as a full member of the team taking responsibility for the safe delivery of care in collaboration with attending physicians, fellows and residents. This team member will meet productivity expectations as set forth by the Division Chief, performing any duties related to patient care activities that are appropriate and clearly delineated.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $100.48 - $130.31 (Hourly Rate).

Required Qualifications

Graduation from a California Board of Registered Nursing approved or verified school of nursing with a master’s degree in nursing or a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP).

Nurse Practitioner 2

  • Minimum three years (3) of recent experience working in a Pediatric Cardiac Intensive Care or Pediatric Cardiac Anesthesia as an Acute Care Pediatric Nurse Practitioner.
  • Master’s Degree in Nursing with an Acute Care Pediatric Nurse Practitioner specialization.
  • Completion of an accredited Acute Care Pediatric Nurse Practitioner program.
  • Demonstration of advanced interpersonal skills with families of acutely and critically ill children.
  • Excellent communication skills and experience with multi-disciplinary coordination
  • Demonstrated competence in clinical case management, leadership, problem identification and resolution.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience in a pediatric prepare clinic
  • Previous experience in the operating room
  • Bilingual – Spanish
  • Demonstrated experience with clinical program development
  • Demonstrated experience with the design and implementation of a quality improvement initiative

License/Certification

  • California Registered Nurse (RN) License without restriction
  • California Certified Nurse Practitioner (NP) without restriction
  • California Nurse Practitioner Furnishing Number including Schedule II furnishing privileges
  • NP national board certification from an accepted certifying agency aligned with the patient population and clinical role

  • California Driver License (if required for position)
  • Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) Registration with Schedules 2, 2N, 3, 3N, 4, and 5 registered to a California address
  • American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) certification

In most cases this is done through its Office of Medical Affairs & Governance (OMAG) prior to the first working day. Credentialing and approval of the Standardized Procedures takes between 60-90 days but can vary.
