Job Summary

We are seeking an Advanced Practice Provider for the Duke Endocrine Department to provide care to inpatients at Duke University Hospital in Durham, NC and Duke Raleigh Hospital in Raleigh, NC. We are seeking an individual with general medicine and/or endocrine experience with excellent communication and clinical skills who can work as an integral member of a large practice clinical setting.

The Advanced Practice Provider (APP) provides direct patient care services and performs medical acts under the supervision of the Endocrine Division MDs. The APP performs physical exams, collects and documents data, conducts diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, orders and schedules laboratory studies and professional consultations, prescribes appropriate interventions and medications, coordinates the care of patients in the ambulatory and possibly hospital settings, and provides direct patient care services. Primary hours will be Monday through Friday day shift with 8-10 weekends/year, with hours flexible to meet the needs of the patients.

Job Duties & Responsibilities
  • Provide /coordinate clinical care for endocrine patients at Duke Hospital or Duke Raleigh Hospital through established protocols and under the supervision of the supervising physician who is either on site or available by pager
  • In collaboration with attending physicians round daily on patients to assess, diagnose, plan treatment, set priorities and realistic outcomes, and evaluate the effectiveness and cost efficiency of patient care;
  • Collaborate with residents, fellows and attendings to formulate treatment plans and monitor patient progress
  • Act as a partner to provide medical services to the patient; collect and document data, conduct diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, order and schedule laboratory studies and professional consultations and provide direct patient care services
  • Perform diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, in partnership with physicians, to diagnose medical and surgical problems and prescribing necessary treatment and services for quality patient care.
  • Take patient histories, conduct physical examinations, and record the data in the patient's record; write progress notes and narrative discharge summaries (if applicable); prepare patient workups and summaries noting pertinent positive and negative findings
  • Order and schedule laboratory studies and diagnostic procedures; explain the necessity, preparation, nature and anticipated effects of scheduled diagnostic and therapeutic procedures to the patient.
  • Utilizes prescriptive privileges for identified patient populations.
  • Communicate verbally and in writing all pertinent patient information to collaborating physicians, nursing staff, case manager, social worker, home health agency, and other relevant healthcare providers and especially those working in the multidisciplinary clinic setting.
  • Document in the patients’ chart (EMR) all relevant data including but not limited to results of diagnostic tests; laboratory results; patients’ condition and response to therapies/interventions; communications with collaborating and supervising MDs and other healthcare professionals.
  • Participate in basic science and clinical research projects conducted by supervising physician; prepare statistical reports and analyses setting forth progress, adverse trends and appropriate recommendations or conclusions (if applicable).
  • Collaborate in teaching and fostering the education of medical students, physician assistant students, and nurse practitioner students in techniques and procedures which are unique to specific clinical setting
  • Assess educational needs of patients/families and provide patient/family education interventions as needed.
  • Serve as a role model through conduct, communication, dress, leadership, ethical decision-making, critical thinking, and problem solving skills.
Job Eligibility Requirements
Education
  • Nurse Practitioners: Work requires completion of an accredited Nurse Practitioner program, with a Master's degree in Nursing.
  • Physician Assistants: Completion of an accredited Physician Assistant program. A Bachelor's degree required; Master's degree strongly preferred.
Certification
  • BLS required.
License
  • Nurse Practitioners: Must have current or compact RN licensure in the state of North Carolina. BLS required. National certification as a NP required prior to or within 6 months of employment.
  • Physician Assistants: Must be licensed in the state of NC, and be certified as a Physician Assistant by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants.
Experience
  • 1+ years of APP experience preferred but will consider new graduates.
Job Hours

Mostly Monday-Friday day shift with 8-10 weekends/year, with flexibility to meet clinic needs
