Qualifications

  • Current, unrestricted Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant license in the state of Virginia.
  • National board certification.
  • BLS/ACLS certification required.
  • Minimum 3 years of advanced practice experience.
  • 2–3 years of occupational health, emergency, critical care, or urgent care experience preferred.
  • Experience with EMR systems and basic office software.

Responsibilities

  • Independently assess, diagnose, and manage occupational injuries and illnesses.
  • Order, perform, and interpret diagnostic tests and screenings.
  • Prescribe medications and therapeutic interventions within scope.
  • Develop evidence-based treatment plans and oversee follow-up care.

Job SummaryThe Nurse Practitioner (NP) or Physician Assistant (PA) serves as the lead onsite advanced practice provider for our occupational health clinic in Radford, VA. This role combines direct clinical care with program support, medical surveillance, and collaboration with client stakeholders. Working at the top of licensure, the NP/PA independently evaluates and manages occupational injuries and illnesses, performs advanced assessments, conducts regulatory medical exams, and provides clinical leadership to ensure employee health, workplace safety, and compliance.The provider functions autonomously when a physician is not onsite and collaborates closely with the WorkCare Consulting Medical Director (CMD), WorkCare support teams, and client partners.Schedule: Monday - Friday 6:00am - 2:00pm.Essential Duties and ResponsibilitiesClinical Care & Advanced PracticeIndependently assess, diagnose, and manage occupational injuries and illnesses.Conduct comprehensive histories and physical examinations.Order, perform, and interpret diagnostic tests and screenings.Prescribe medications and therapeutic interventions within scope.Develop evidence-based treatment plans and oversee follow-up care.Provide expert consultation for complex or higher-acuity cases.Deliver advanced triage, stabilization, and emergency clinical decision-making.Serve as the lead onsite clinician when no physician is present, consulting with the CMD as needed.Medical Surveillance & Regulatory ExamsPerform OSHA-required and client-required medical examinations.Conduct respirator clearance evaluations, audiometry, PFTs, vision testing, immunizations, and TB screening.Interpret clinical findings and determine medical suitability for job tasks.Case Management & Return-to-WorkLead clinical case management, including recovery monitoring and return-to-work planning.Determine work restrictions and modified duty recommendations.Collaborate with external specialists, workers’ compensation partners, and WorkCare’s Injury Care Program.Client Partnership & Program SupportCollaborate with EH&S teams to provide clinical insight into injury trends and prevention opportunities.Partner with WorkCare’s Prevention Services to reinforce safe work practices and deliver targeted health education.Provide ergonomic recommendations and employee health education (additional training required for ergonomic assessments).Participate in safety meetings, incident reviews, and planning discussions.Communicate professionally with client leadership, HR, EH&S, and WorkCare management in alignment with the WorkCare Communication Policy.Clinic Operations & LeadershipEnsure clinical compliance, documentation accuracy, and clinic readiness.Provide clinical guidance to RNs, LPNs, OHTs, or other onsite support staff.Maintain stocked medications, supplies, and emergency equipment.Document all encounters accurately in the EMR or other charting systems.Maintain compliance with HIPAA, OSHA, and state practice acts.Prepare clinical reports, injury trend analyses, and required client documentation.Performs additional duties and assumes additional responsibilities as identified by supervisor for the efficient operation of WorkCare.Education and ExperienceCurrent, unrestricted Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant license in the state of VirginiaNational board certificationBLS/ACLS certification requiredMinimum 3 years of advanced practice experience2–3 years of occupational health, emergency, critical care, or urgent care experience requiredExperience with EMR systems and basic office software applicationsDEA registration (or eligibility) as requiredSkills & CompetenciesAdvanced diagnostic reasoning and independent clinical decision-making.Strong assessment skills and clinical leadership abilities.Ability to collaborate with multidisciplinary teams.Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and EHR systems.Ability to maintain confidentiality, professional boundaries, and a high level of discretion.Ability to manage multiple priorities and take initiative in a dynamic environment.Professional communication and interpersonal skills in high-demand situations.Site-Specific Compliance RequirementsMust meet all site access, security, safety, and contractor onboarding requirements.Must complete required background screening, safety orientation, badge requirements, and identification verification.Must comply with all site safety, health, environmental, and security protocols while working onsite.Physical DemandsProlonged sitting and computer use.Occasional standing, walking, stooping, kneeling, or crouching.Ability to lift and/or move up to 25 pounds occasionally.Daily walk required between parking area and clinic.Ability to work under stress and maintain focus in a clinical environment.Work EnvironmentPrimarily indoor, office/clinic environment.Moderate noise level; controlled temperature and air quality.This position has an hourly pay range of $64 - $67 per hour.
