POSITION SUMMARY

Under the general direction of the Director of Rural Health Clinics, the Nurse Practitioner (NP) provides comprehensive patient care for episodic visits and the ongoing management of acute and chronic health conditions. The NP obtains health histories, performs physical examinations, evaluates and manages patients across varying levels of clinical risk, and develops appropriate treatment plans within the scope of practice, training, competency, and applicable regulatory requirements.

The Nurse Practitioner collaborates with physicians and other members of the healthcare team to coordinate patient care, obtain consultation when appropriate, and facilitate referrals to specialists and outside agencies as clinically indicated. The NP practices in accordance with all organizational policies, procedures, clinical protocols, and applicable federal and State of California regulations.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND SKILLS
  • Current and unrestricted California Registered Nurse (RN) and Nurse Practitioner (NP) licensure/certification, including furnishing authority as applicable, or completion of an approved Nurse Practitioner program with all required California certifications and approvals.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS)/CPR certification.
  • Current DEA registration, as required for the position and prescribing responsibilities.
  • Demonstrated ability to independently assess patients and develop appropriate treatment plans within scope of practice and in collaboration or consultation with physicians when clinically appropriate.
  • Strong clinical assessment, critical-thinking, decision-making, and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Patient Assessment, Diagnosis, and Treatment

Independently evaluates patients, performs comprehensive and focused assessments, and develops appropriate treatment plans within established scope of practice and clinical protocols.

Recognizes conditions requiring immediate physician consultation, intervention, or a higher level of care.

Identifies normal and abnormal findings through patient history, physical examination, and diagnostic evaluation.

Orders, reviews, and interprets appropriate laboratory, imaging, and other diagnostic studies within scope of practice.

Executes applicable standing orders and clinical protocols.

Performs routine diagnostic and therapeutic procedures consistent with training, competency, and scope of practice.

Prescribes medications and treatments as permitted by California law and applicable regulatory requirements.

Coordinates consultations and referrals to physicians, specialists, and outside agencies as clinically appropriate.

All Age Groups: Newborn, Infant/Pediatric, Adolescent, Adult, and Geriatric.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Position requires the ability to stand and sit for extended periods, walk, bend, reach, and perform other physical activities associated with providing patient care. Must be able to lift and/or move up to 30 pounds and possess the physical ability necessary to safely perform the essential functions of the position, with or without reasonable accommodation.

Must possess the emotional stability, sound judgment, critical-thinking ability, and professionalism necessary to effectively manage complex clinical situations, difficult patient interactions, and workplace concerns. Must demonstrate maturity, objectivity, confidentiality, and professionalism while working in a fast-paced healthcare environment.
