This is an exciting opportunity to join a dynamic and mission-driven public health team serving the diverse communities of Pima County. This role offers the chance to practice at the top of your license in a highly collaborative, multidisciplinary environment that includes Family Planning, Teen Health, Mobile Health, STD/HIV services, Immunizations, Well Woman Health Check, and Medication Assisted Treatment programs. Providers in this position deliver comprehensive, patient-centered care while helping improve health outcomes across the community through innovative and accessible public health services.

Essential Functions

As defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, this classification may include any of the following tasks, knowledge, skills, and other characteristics. Work assignments may vary depending on the department’s need and will be communicated to the application or incumbent by the supervisor.

  • Examines, evaluates, assesses, tests, and treats patients for infectious and STI-related diseases, and provides counseling, education, and information on safe sex practices and disease prevention.
  • Provides family planning advice and counseling to clients based on their reproduction intentions, contraceptive preferences, and medical eligibility, and dispenses contraception as appropriate including, but not limited to device/implant placement and removal, and emergency contraception.
  • Administers screening and diagnostic tests on patients for infectious and communicable diseases such as Covid-19 and monkeypox, interprets the results and educates on treatment and prevention of diseases.
  • Records clients’ health history, diagnoses, treatment plans, and medication in electronic health records.
  • Assists with development of clinical protocols, policies and procedures, and the implementation, evaluation, and quality assurance of the same.
  • Evaluates the efficacy of medications and treatments and adjusts as necessary according to patients' needs.
  • May act as preceptor for other nurse practitioners, medical students, interns and residents.
  • May supervise, assign and review the work of professional patient care services personnel.
  • May participate in outreach activities, as well as public health emergency events, exercises and training.
Minimum Qualifications

Graduation from an accredited school of professional nursing and certification as a Nurse Practitioner by the State of Arizona in the particular specialty area as defined by the department head at the time of recruitment AND six months of clinical practice experience in a public health or community setting. (Relevant experience and/or education from an accredited college or university may be substituted.) Qualifying education and experience must be clearly documented in the "Education" and "Work Experience" sections of the application. Preferred Qualifications
  • Minimum one (1) year experience providing reproductive healthcare services to male and female clients from adolescence through adulthood, including the delivery of birth control methods such as IUDs and implants, conducting sexual health screenings and evaluations, and providing treatment for sexually transmitted infections (STIs).
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish), or multilingual including Spanish.
  • Experience addressing health disparities and promoting health equity.
  • Experience initiating medication-assisted treatment for substance use.
  • Minimum one (1) year experience leading and implementing evidence-based clinical practices and collaborating with multidisciplinary professionals.
Selection Procedure

Pima County Human Resources Department reserves the right to admit to the selection process only those candidates that meet the minimum qualifications. All applications will be assessed based on an evaluation of the listed education and experience. Candidates meeting the minimum qualifications may be further evaluated/scored against any advertised Preferred Qualifications. The hiring authority will interview and select the successful candidate from a referral list provided by Human Resources. Additional assessments/testing may be required as part of the selection process.

Supplemental Information

Licenses and Certificates: Valid driver license is required at time of application. Valid AZ driver license is required at time of appointment. The successful applicant will be subject to a 39-month DOT Motor Vehicle Record review to determine applicant’s suitability to operate county vehicles in accordance with Pima County administrative procedures. Failure to obtain and maintain the required licenses and certifications shall be grounds for termination. Any offer of employment resulting from this recruitment is contingent upon Fleet Services’ review and approval of the candidate’s driving record. Failure to maintain the required licensure shall be grounds for termination. Possession of a current license to practice as a Registered Professional Nurse in the State of Arizona and certification as a Nurse Practitioner by the Arizona State Board of Nursing to practice in a clinical specialty areas. Prescription and dispensing certification issued by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) is required for certain positions within this category.

Special Notice Items

The County requires pre-employment background checks. Successful candidates will receive a post-offer, pre-employment background screening to include verification of work history, education, and criminal conviction history. A prior criminal conviction will not automatically disqualify a candidate from employment with the County. Department of Labor regulation CFR Part 1910.1030 requires notification that this category may have a high risk of exposure to blood-borne pathogens. Hepatitis B vaccine will be provided. Due to need for possible access to law enforcement, detention or correction facilities or the supervision of detainees or inmates, some positions in this category may require satisfactory completion of a personal background investigation by law enforcement agencies. This position will require post-job offer proof of immunization(s) or immunization(s) and/or a TB screening. This position will require a post-job offer physical and/or drug screen, which may include respirator fit test.

Physical/Sensory Work Requirements

Constantly required to exchange accurate information. Constantly uses fine motor skills to utilize computer equipment and healthcare equipment. Constantly required to observe details at close range. Occasionally required to move equipment weighing up to 25 pounds.

Motion Activity - grasping; Hearing Activity - in noisy areas, behind themselves and equipment alarms; Speaking Activity - in person and on the phone; Vision Activity - may be required to operate motor vehicle, distinguish colors, have depth perception, and peripheral vision.

Working Conditions

Occasionally exposed to hazardous fluids. Occasionally exposed to the risk of needlesticks and exposure to communicable diseases.
