Job summary

Maricopa County is seeking a Nurse Practitioner to provide patient care for individuals at risk of sexually transmitted infections and tuberculosis. This role requires work in clinical and field settings to support public health efforts, including prevention, education, and treatment.

Job description

About the Position

This role provides patient care for individuals at risk of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and tuberculosis (TB). The provider will work in clinical, field, and mobile settings across Maricopa County, aid in prevention, education, and treatment, and support public health efforts to reduce the spread of these diseases.

Job Contributions
  • Obtain and document patient health histories, perform examinations, assess needs, establish diagnoses, and determine appropriate medical procedures.
  • Provide patient care during clinic hours, weekend and evening coverage, and outreach sites throughout Maricopa County.
  • Document findings in a complete, organized manner; prepare assessments and plans in a clear, logical style.
  • Prescribe and dispense medication in accordance with state and federal regulations.
  • Offer basic health education and counseling; coordinate medical resources to meet patient needs.
  • Order and interpret imaging and laboratory tests, including lab results and chest x‑rays, applying findings to diagnoses and treatment plans.
  • Assist in developing teaching curricula for STIs and TB (including latent TB) that meet the needs of healthcare professionals and students, based on CDC guidance and other standards.
  • Serve on a rotational basis as the provider on‑call to receive high‑priority public health reports during night, weekend, and holiday hours; provide medical or infection‑control guidance to providers with backup support from a public‑health physician.
  • Teach nursing, nurse‑practitioner, medical student, resident, and fellow personnel how to obtain health histories, screen, conduct examinations, and diagnose and treat TB, latent TB, and STIs.
Qualifications
  • Completion of an accredited Nurse Practitioner educational program.
  • Valid, unrestricted Arizona Nurse Practitioner license in good standing.
  • Clinical experience with emphasis on chronic care or communicable‑disease treatment preferred.
  • Bilingual proficiency in English and Spanish.
  • Valid Arizona driver’s license and reliable transportation for travel to clinic and outreach locations.
  • Ability to travel to other locations when coverage is needed.
  • Must participate in emergency‑response training as scheduled and be available to respond during public‑health emergencies.
  • Must secure and maintain an Arizona Department of Public Safety Level 1 Fingerprint Clearance Card and pass a background check.
  • Current CPR and First Aid certification required upon hire.
  • Within one month of hire, evidence of immunity or receipt of immunizations for vaccine‑preventable illnesses (MMR, Tdap, Varicella, annual influenza, HepatitisB, or TB test as required).
  • Must pass a pre‑employment background and/or fingerprint investigation and drug and alcohol testing when required for safety‑sensitive positions.
Working Conditions
  • Telework not available; primary location in clinical setting with occasional field or mobile unit work.
  • Physical demands include exerting up to 20lbs. occasionally and 10lbs. frequently; walking or standing to a significant degree.
