Overview

The purpose and overall goal of the Pre‑Anesthesia Screening (PAS) unit is to gather the clinical information necessary for the safe and effective administration of anesthesia. The Nurse Practitioner (NP) oversees the Pre‑Op clinic, managing pre‑surgical testing and anesthesia clearance, and collaborates with the CRNA team and Internal Medicine to determine patient fitness for surgery.

Qualifications
Education
  • Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) – Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP)
Experience
  • Must have completed a nurse practitioner degree
  • Experience in a pre‑op clinic setting preferred
  • Must have active CPR/BLS certification
  • 1‑3 years of experience as an RN
Licensure/Certification
  • Must possess a valid, current, full and unrestricted license to practice as a Nurse Practitioner in any U.S. state, District of Columbia, or the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico
  • Must be credentialed to serve on the medical staff (provide all related information as requested)

The incumbent must frequently sit, stand, walk, bend, kneel, crouch, twist, maintain balance, and reach. The ability to lift, push, and pull up to 10 pounds frequently and occasionally more than 10 pounds is required. The position may expose the incumbent to infectious disease, chemical agents, dust, fumes, gases, hazardous equipment, and extreme temperatures.

Mental

The incumbent must work autonomously for prolonged periods, manage high stress, communicate calmly with hostile individuals, handle multiple priorities, and make decisions under high pressure. Shift work may be required.

Responsibilities
Essential Functions
  • Serve as NP of the pre‑op clinic, assign and direct all nurses and staff.
  • Serve under the Chief of CRNA and follow directives.
  • Oversee day‑to‑day tasks of the pre‑op clinic, evaluating all patients sent from surgical clinics for timely clearance.
  • Collect labs, perform EKGs, and conduct medical history and physical exams using established algorithms.
  • Supervise staff to ensure patients receive appropriate education and pre‑operative preparations.
  • Provide input and attend meetings with affected departments.
  • Plan, organize, and coordinate operational services of the pre‑op clinic with the Chief CRNA.
  • Participate in joint administrative programs and recommend coordination of services.
  • Ensure compliance with Joint Commission accreditation standards and hospital policies.
  • Attend OR committee meetings.
  • Integrate cultural and developmental needs into patient care plans.
  • Document patient care according to established standards.
  • Participate in performance improvement activities and data analysis.
  • Perform diagnostic procedures—phlebotomy, laboratory specimens, electrocardiograms—accurately.
  • Explain perioperative instructions, treatments, and nursing goals to patients and families.
  • Wear appropriate PPE and follow CDC guidelines for PPE donning and doffing.
  • Complete routine cleaning and decontamination processes for communicable disease‑contaminated surfaces.
  • Complete patient care documentation in the electronic health record in real time.
  • Participate in workflow or testing teams related to electronic health record projects.
  • Perform other duties as assigned or directed.
