Job summary

UCSF Health is seeking an Advanced Endoscopy inpatient APP to work with a multidisciplinary team, delivering high-level patient care in a fast-paced setting. The role emphasizes independent assessment, targeted procedures, and collaborative decision-making with Fellows and Attending Physicians.

Ideal candidates will have CA RN licensure with a master’s degree in nursing (MSN) or DNP and at least two years in an adult inpatient environment, with preferred gastroenterology/endoscopy experience.

Qualifications

  • Graduate from a California Board of Registered Nursing-approved or verified school of nursing with a master’s degree in nursing or a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP).
  • Two years of experience in an adult inpatient setting.
  • Preferred: experience in gastroenterology or endoscopy; involvement with advanced procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Evaluate and manage inpatient patients independently or with physicians; perform histories and exams.
  • Document encounters in the electronic medical record per UCSF rules.
  • Assist in procedures and discharge planning per privileges and protocol.
  • Coordinate care across hospital teams and ensure timely follow-ups.

Job Description

Come join our dynamic, highly skilled Advanced Endoscopy inpatient APP team. The Advanced Endoscopy service provides state‑of‑the‑art surgical treatments, including cyst‑gastrostomy, endoscopic necrosectomy, endoscopy ultrasound‑guided gastrojejunostomy, and endoscopic ultrasound‑guided biliary drainage procedures. Opportunities to train in other advanced procedures, such as EMR, ESD, POEM, ESG, TIF, endoscopic suturing, balloon‑assisted enteroscopy, and endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography, are also available. We value professional individuals who possess strong interpersonal and communication skills and can prioritize and adapt to changing situations. Our Advanced Endoscopy APPs work at the top of the scope, managing patients independently in a collaborative environment with Fellows and Attending Physicians.

Responsibilities
  • 90% Inpatient – Direct Patient Care
  • Independently (independent APP encounter) or collaboratively (shared physician and APP encounter) evaluates and manages patients, including taking histories, performing physical examinations, responding to changes in patient status, performing consults, ordering or furnishing medications, diagnostics, therapies, referrals, DME, and home health services.
  • Care provided must be documented in the electronic medical record in accordance with UCSF Rules and Regulations.
  • Provider services must be billed to reflect the performing provider and comply with the APP Billing Policy 3.08.01.
  • APPs must respond to clinical documentation integrity inquiries from the Department of Quality and Patient Safety within 3 days.
  • Performs procedures granted through privileges and standardized procedures.
  • Identifies patients with acute decompensation or failure and responds to the hospital plan of care and reviews with physician.
  • Initiates consultations as indicated.
  • Documents independent assessment findings and recommends appropriate treatments.
  • Participates in service rounds and patient evaluation and treatment planning.
  • Reviews lab tests, X‑rays, and other diagnostic tests, and initiates appropriate team plans.
  • Evaluates complex cases, establishes individualized plans of care for disposition to a lower level of care.
  • Interprets and acts upon completed tests, procedures, and radiographic studies.
  • Completes clinically relevant paperwork/EHR documentation, including ordering medications, completing episodic care notes, and discharge summaries in accordance with UCSF Rules and Regulations.
  • Effectively communicates findings, treatment options, and care plans with patients and families.
  • May first assist in the operating room if privileged to do so through OMAG after completing required certification and proctoring.
  • Monitors and evaluates patients for discharge, sets parameters for continuum of care with a multidisciplinary team, and defines discharge regimen.
  • Discharges patients, including prescribing/furnishing medications, ordering DME, recommending or referring for ongoing follow‑up care, providing discharge teaching, and completing discharge summaries.
Care Coordination (10% of time)
  • Coordinates care throughout the continuum, including hospital admission, care coordination with staff and consulting services, and hospital discharge planning.
  • Coordinates episodic care and determines timing of routine clinic follow‑up.
  • Participates in huddles with clinic/hospital staff and anticipates patients who require close management or intervention.
  • Consults with nursing staff on plan and implementation of individualized nursing care plans.
  • Independently provides case summaries for disability, insurance agencies, workers compensation, work releases, and medical supply agencies.
  • Formulates and implements protocols to improve quality and efficiency and control waste in the clinical specialty.
Minimum Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities (KSA)

  • Ability to cope with personal stress experienced by health care providers and team members.
  • Ability to meet minimum standards for hospital credentialing and billing as a billable provider.
  • Submit health‑plan enrollment by the first clinical day.
  • Adherence to UCSF Medical Staff Bylaws, Rules and Regulations, Code of Conduct, PRIDE values, and applicable policies and procedures.
  • Adherence to UCSF HIPAA, privacy, communication, documentation, encounter closure, and billing policies.
  • Mandatory attendance at the Office of Advanced Practice Providers Orientation Sessions.
  • Mandatory attendance at the APP Onboarding Committee APP Onboarding Series.
  • Requires flexibility to work at all UCSF Health facilities/locations.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Required Qualifications:
  • Graduate from a California Board of Registered Nursing‑approved or verified school of nursing with a master’s degree in nursing or a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP).
  • Two (2) years of experience in an adult inpatient setting.
  • Preferred Qualifications:
  • One (1) or more years’ experience in gastroenterology or another procedural discipline in the past two years.
  • Any prior experience in endoscopy within a gastroenterology discipline.
License / Certifications
  • California Registered Nurse (RN) License without restriction.
  • California Certified Nurse Practitioner (NP) without restriction.
  • California Nurse Practitioner Furnishing Number, including Schedule II furnishing privileges.
  • NP national board certification from an accepted certifying agency aligned with the patient population and clinical role.
  • Adult Inpatient certifications (ACNP‑BC, AGACNP‑BC, ACNPC‑AG, ACNPC).
  • California Driver’s License (if required for position).
  • DEA Registration with Schedules 2, 2N, 3, 3N, 4, 5 registered to a California address.
  • American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • No additional AHA or other certifications required.
