Position Description
Position Summary
The Nurse Practitioner plays an essential role in providing high-quality, efficient, and cost-effective medical care to San Diego State University students. Under the supervision of the Student Health Services Lead Physician, the Nurse Practitioner provides a wide range of primary health care services, including assessment, diagnosis, treatment, preventive care, and health maintenance. Working as part of an interdisciplinary healthcare team, the incumbent collaborates with physicians, nurse practitioners, nurses, medical assistants, clinical assistants, and other healthcare professionals and utilizes Student Health Services resources including laboratory, radiology, pharmacy, Dental, Eye, and Orthopedic Clinics. This position offers the opportunity to provide comprehensive, student-focused care in a welcoming environment while supporting the health, well-being, and academic success of SDSU students.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide comprehensive primary care by conducting patient evaluations, obtaining medical histories and physicals, diagnosing acute and chronic illnesses and injuries, and developing individualized treatment plans.
- Order and interpret laboratory, x-ray, and other diagnostic tests; perform approved procedures and minor surgeries; furnish medications; and provide preventive health, family planning, and health maintenance education.
- Assess basic mental health needs and provide appropriate referrals, consultation, or medication management when indicated.
- Collaborate with physicians and other healthcare professionals on complex health concerns, referrals, and continuity of care while utilizing Student Health Services and community-based resources.
- Maintain timely and accurate electronic health records and ensure care complies with university policies, quality assurance and infection control protocols, HIPAA, FERPA, and applicable professional standards.

Position Information
- This is a full-time (1.0 time-base), benefits eligible, permanent/probationary position.
- This appointment is for an 11/12 pay-plan position. The incumbent works 11 months per year and is paid over 12 months, with July 2027 as the anticipated off month.
- This position is designated as exempt under FLSA and is not eligible for overtime compensation.
- Standard SDSU work hours are Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., but may vary based on operational needs.
- The individual hired into this role will work on campus at SDSU in San Diego.
Department Summary
Student Health Services offers primary medical care and health promotion to students of San Diego State University through a wide range of programs and services. Care is provided by board certified physicians, certified nurse practitioners and other medical staff including nurses, clinical laboratory scientists, x-ray technologists, medical assistants, and pharmacists. In addition to the basic medical care, Student Health Services offers health education, orthopedics, osteopathic manipulative treatment and psychiatry.

Education and Experience
Academic degree or certificate from an approved college or university-based Nurse Practitioner program or equivalent training and experience as outlined by the California Board of Registered Nursing (BRN). Incumbents must be clinically competent in a medical specialty applicable to their position and possess sufficient experience to independently perform the duties of a Nurse Practitioner within that specialty.
Key Qualifications
- At least 1 year of progressively responsible professional nurse practitioner experience with demonstrated capability to carry out the responsibilities of the position.
- Current certification in CPR/AED from American Red Cross or American Heart Association.
- Ability to work cooperatively in a team setting with good interpersonal and communication skills.
- Ability to perform patient triage and handle emergent and/or potentially critical situations with speed, accuracy and diplomacy.
- Possess computer skills in both practice management and electronic health records.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with other health center staff.
- At least 3 years of progressively responsible professional nurse practitioner experience with demonstrated capability to carry out the responsibilities of the position is preferred.
- A Master's Degree or Doctorate is preferred.
- Possess the ability to provide effective work direction and to plan and organize the work of others.
- Possess the ability to assess, plan, develop, implement and evaluate a clinical program.
- Experience in splinting and/or casting.
Licenses/Certifications Required
- Possess and maintain a valid California Registered Nurse (RN) license.
- Possess and maintain a California Board of Registered Nursing (BRN) Nurse Practitioner certificate.
- If delegated the authority to furnish medications, possess and maintain a valid BRN Furnishing Certificate.
- If delegated the authority to furnish specific controlled substances, possess and maintain a valid DEA number and certificate.

Compensation:
Step placement will be determined based on relevant qualifications and professional experience, in alignment with the department’s budget and equity guidelines.
- Initial step placement is not expected to exceed Step 4 ($9,773).
- Salary step placement for internal applicants will follow the CSUEU Collective Bargaining Agreement.
- CSU Classification Salary Range: $9,210 - $13,416 per month (Step 1 – Step 20).
- Future increases, including step advancements, are subject to contract negotiations.
