Position Summary

Student Health Services at San Diego State University is seeking a Clinical Assistant to support patient scheduling, front-office operations, and daily clinic coordination. This position serves as an important point of contact for patients by scheduling appointments, coordinating patient flow, participating in the patient intake process, answering routine questions, and providing information about clinic services , and community health resources.

Key Responsibilities
  • Schedule and coordinate patient appointments based on patient needs, medical provider availability, and basic triage guidelines.
  • Serve as a primary point of contact by providing accurate information about Student Health Services, available services, associated costs, and related campus resources.
  • Use sound judgment to determine appropriate scheduling, follow-up, or assist with community referrals for students to licensed health care professionals.
  • Verify patient eligibility and demographic information; process forms, documentation, medical records, and electronic health record updates accurately and confidentially.
  • Coordinate patient flow, communicate estimated wait times, adjust schedules in response to routine changes, and support timely access to health care services.
  • Manage routine communications regarding appointments, records, clinic procedures, and patient questions while protecting patient privacy and confidential health information.

Position Information
  • This is a full-time (1.0 time-base), benefits eligible, permanent/probationary position.
  • This appointment is for an 11/12 pay-plan position. The incumbent works 11 months per year and is paid over 12 months, with June as the anticipated off month.
  • This position is designated as non-exempt under FLSA and is eligible for overtime compensation.
  • Standard SDSU work hours are Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., but may vary based on operational needs.
  • The individual hired into this role will work on campus at SDSU in San Diego
Department Summary

Student Health Services offers primary medical care and health promotion to students of San Diego State University through a wide range of programs and services. Care is provided by board-certified physicians, licensed nurse practitioners, and other clinical staff including registered and licensed vocational nurses, clinical laboratory scientists, x-ray technologists, medical assistants, and pharmacists. In addition to primary care services, Student Health Services offers mental health services, reproductive health services, physical exams and orthopedic consults.

Education and Experience
  • High school diploma.
  • Or equivalent education with familiarity with a health care setting.
  • Or combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge and abilities.
Key Qualifications
  • Patient-centered service and respectful communication with patients from diverse backgrounds.
  • Knowledge of patient privacy and confidentiality requirements, including the appropriate handling of sensitive health information.
  • Proficiency in accurately entering, updating, retrieving, and maintaining patient information using electronic health record and clinic management systems.
  • Familiarity with basic medical terminology and its use when communicating with patients, practitioners, and clinic staff.
  • Sound judgment, discretion, and initiative when performing routine patient services, clerical duties, and clinical support responsibilities.
  • Clear and professional communication skills in person, by telephone, and in writing.
Preferred Qualifications
  • 6 months to one year of experience in a health care administration setting performing patient support, clinical assistance, medical office, or related clinic support responsibilities.
  • Experience scheduling appointments, checking in patients, coordinating patient flow, and maintaining patient records in a clinical setting.
  • Experience working with confidential medical information and applying patient privacy requirements.
  • Proficiency with email and standard Microsoft Office applications, including Word and Excel.

Compensation:
Step placement will be determined based on relevant qualifications and professional experience, in alignment with the department’s budget and equity guidelines.

  • Initial step placement is not expected to exceed Step 1 ($3,461.00) per month.
  • Salary step placement for internal applicants will follow the CSUEU Collective Bargaining Agreement.
  • CSU Classification Salary Range: $3,461.00 - $4,846.00 per month (Step 1 – Step 18).
  • Future increases, including step advancements, are subject to contract negotiations.
