Job summary

Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center in Odessa, TX is seeking a Neonatal Nurse Practitioner to provide primary and specialty neonatal care in collaboration with a medical team. The role includes education for families, advanced procedures, and discharge planning for high-risk newborns.

Responsibilities include performing procedures, ordering tests, prescribing medications, and assisting with deliveries and transports.

Qualifications

  • Graduation from an approved nursing program with Texas RN licensure or transferability.
  • Current Nurse Practitioner certification in an approved specialty and Texas recognition as an Advanced Practitioner.
  • Texas Board of Nurse Examiners recognition for advanced practice.

  • Provide patient care management in a Level-III NICU in Odessa, TX in collaboration with attending physicians.
  • Educate and counsel families, explain diagnoses and discharge plans.
  • Perform advanced neonatal procedures (intubation, umbilical/central lines, chest tube) and resuscitation.
  • Order/interpret diagnostics to inform treatment decisions.
  • Prescribe medications for newborn conditions including prematurity and respiratory issues.
  • Coordinate safe discharge planning and follow-up care.
  • Attend high-risk deliveries and transports for critically ill patients.
  • Mentor and teach students and residents.
  • Maintain scheduling flexibility to support work-life balance.
  • Earn additional compensation by covering extra shifts.

Work is performed under usual clinic conditions and requires a high degree of contact with patients, families, and other clinic personnel and outside professionals. Some positions in the classification require travel to outreach clinics and home visits, and participation in educational efforts and special programs that occur outside of normal working hours.

Major/Essential Functions
  • Provide patient care management in collaboration with attending physicians in a Level-III NICU at Medical Center Hospital in Odessa, Texas.
  • Educate, counsel, and support families by explaining diagnoses, treatment plans, and prognoses, while guiding them through discharge planning and ongoing care needs.
  • Perform advanced neonatal procedures such as intubation, umbilical and central line placement, chest tube insertion, and neonatal resuscitation.
  • Order and interpret diagnostic tests, lab results, and imaging to inform treatment decisions.
  • Prescribe medications to treat a variety of newborn conditions, including prematurity, congenital heart defects, respiratory distress, and chromosomal abnormalities.
  • Coordinate and manage safe discharge planning and follow-up care.
  • Attend high-risk deliveries.
  • Attend transports for high acuity patients.
  • Mentor and teach students and residents.
  • Flexibility with scheduling of shifts to meet requirements and work-life balance.

Required Qualifications

Graduated from an approved accredited nursing program; current RN license in the State of Texas or have the ability to transfer your license to Texas. Certification as a Nurse Practitioner in the appropriate nursing specialty from an approved certification program as recognized by the Texas State Board of Nurse Examiners. Recognition by the Texas Board of Nurse Examiners as an Advance Practitioner.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Previous experience as Neonatal Nurse Practitioner.
  • Experience working with underserved population.
  • Bilingual English/Spanish
