Job summary

VHS Hospice is seeking a Nurse Practitioner to join our team serving Newport News and surrounding VA locations. We offer full-time, part-time, and per diem opportunities with competitive pay and comprehensive benefits.

The Nurse Practitioner provides advanced clinical care in hospice and palliative medicine, supports pain and symptom management, coordinates care across settings, and works with the Medical Director to ensure high-quality end-of-life care for patients and families.

Qualifications

• MSN from an accredited nursing school; current Virginia RN and NP licensure in good standing.
• 2–4 years of experience with serious, advanced, or terminal illnesses.
• Minimum 2 years in Oncology, Pain & Symptom Management, Palliative Care, Hospice, hospital, or physician practice.
• Current CPR certification; ability to obtain hospital privileges.
• AANP/NBCHPN certification preferred; required within an agreed timeframe if not current.
• Valid driver’s license and personal vehicle for on-the-job transportation.

Responsibilities

• Provide medical support and coordination to hospice patients and families.
• Offer expertise in pain and symptom management and evaluate terminal prognosis for patients, families, and staff.
• Ensure care delivery aligns with hospice and palliative care guidelines, standards, and best practices.
• Collaborate with VHS providers regarding new patient referrals.
• Perform patient visits in homes and facilities, including telehealth.
• Collaborate with attending physicians on patient care and coordinate hospice referrals.
• Provide Hospice Medical Director with necessary face-to-face encounter documentation.
• Perform other duties as assigned by the Medical Director.

Locations include: Newport News, Hampton, Kilmarnock, Gloucester, Williamsburg, Yorktown and Southside, VA

$50-$60/hour (all inclusive)

Responsibilities for Nurse Practitioner

• Provide medical support and coordination to hospice patients and family members.
• Provide medical expertise in pain and symptom management and evaluate terminal prognosis for patients, families, and staff.
• Ensure care delivery aligns with established hospice and palliative care guidelines, standards, and best practices.
• Regularly communicate and collaborate with VHS providers regarding new patient referrals.
• Perform patient visits in private residences, long-term care facilities, assisted living facilities, hospitals, and other settings, including telehealth.
• Collaborate with attending physicians regarding patient care and treatment, and support the coordination of hospice referrals.
• Provide the Hospice Medical Director with the required face-to-face encounter documentation.
• Perform other duties as assigned by the Medical Director.

Qualifications for Nurse Practitioner

• MSN from an accredited nursing school required; current state licensure as a Registered Nurse and Nurse Practitioner in good standing required in the state of Virginia.
• 2-4 years of experience in a medical specialty involving care of patients diagnosed with serious, advanced, or terminal illnesses is required.
• Minimum of 2 years of clinical experience in Oncology, Pain & Symptom Management, Palliative Care, Hospice, hospital, or physician practice setting required.
• Current CPR Certification required.
• Ability to obtain hospital privileges as required.
• Certification by the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners and/or the National Board for Certification of Hospice and Palliative Nurses (NBCHPN) preferred; certification required within an agreed-upon timeframe if not currently obtained.
• Valid driver’s license, personal vehicle for on-the-job transportation, and proof of insurance as required per policy.
