Summary

At the Indian Health Service (IHS), nurses provide compassionate, evidence-based care to American Indian and Alaska Native patients across diverse settings.

Duties

The Outpatient Staff Registered Nurse (RN) delivers comprehensive, patient‑centered care in an ambulatory setting, demonstrating professional competence, leadership, and sound clinical judgment. Key responsibilities include:

  • Assessing and triaging patients, performing physical assessments, and implementing provider/clinic standing orders.
  • Administering medications and treatments, monitoring patient responses, and documenting in electronic health records.
  • Coordinating care activities with the care team and communicating patient status to providers and staff.
  • Providing patient and family counseling, health education, and preventive care instruction.
  • Overseeing licensed vocational nurses and nursing assistants in the clinic.
  • Participating in quality improvement, infection prevention, and process improvement initiatives.
Required Qualifications

To qualify, applicants must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower federal level; meet education and licensure requirements; and possess a valid U.S. driver's license thereafter May 7, 2025.

Background Investigation Requirement

All candidates must complete a federal background investigation within five (5) calendar days of issuance. Timely completion is essential to avoid processing delays or unsuitability determinations.

Education & Licensing

Applicants must hold a graduate or higher level degree, bachelor’s, associate degree, or diploma from an accredited professional nursing program, and a current, active, unrestricted RN license in a U.S. jurisdiction. Foreign‑educated nurses must provide official certification from the Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools and an unofficial transcript.

Basic Requirements
  • GS‑5: Bachelor’s degree in Nursing with no experience, or diploma/associate degree with one full year of professional nursing experience.
  • GS‑7: Bachelor’s in Nursing and eligibility under Superior Academic Achievement provision; or bachelor’s with one full year of professional nursing experience; or diploma/associate with two full years of experience; or completion of one full year of graduate nursing education.
  • GS‑9: Master’s degree in professional nursing; or at least one full year of professional nursing experience plus a bachelor’s, associate, or diploma from a professional nursing program.
Minimum Qualifications

Applicants must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience in outpatient nursing, including:

  • Triage, patient assessment, and implementation of standing orders.
  • Medication administration and observation of treatment response.
  • Coordinating patient care with the interdisciplinary team.
  • Patient education and health promotion.
  • Use of outpatient clinic equipment (e.g., EKG, point‑of‑care testing).
  • Development and monitoring of care plans, including disease management guidelines for GS‑09+ roles.
Additional Conditions of Employment
  • U.S. citizenship required.
  • Selective Service registration required for males born after 12/31/1959.
  • Probationary period may apply.
  • On‑call hours or standby duty may be required.
