Overview

At the Indian Health Service (IHS), nurses deliver compassionate, patient-centered care to patients across all ages in an ambulatory setting. The RN demonstrates professional competence, leadership, and sound clinical judgment while overseeing licensed vocational nurses and nursing assistants.

Responsibilities
  • Deliver patient-centered nursing care to individuals and families across all ages.
  • Oversee and provide direction to licensed vocational nurses and nursing assistants.
  • Coordinate patient care activities, health promotion, education, and quality improvement initiatives.
  • Implement standardized disease‑management and prevention guidelines, perform clinical assessments, and develop care plans.
  • Document all care in the electronic health record, monitor patient status, and initiate interventions as needed.
Core Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Nursing (or equivalent) or a diploma/associate degree with at least one year of professional nursing experience.
  • Valid, unrestricted RN license in the United States.
  • Completed National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX‑RN).
  • At least one year of outpatient nursing experience, including triage, patient assessment, medication administration, and coordination of care.
Basic Requirements (GS Grade)
  • GS‑5: Bachelor’s degree in Nursing and no experience OR diploma/associate degree and one year of professional experience.
  • GS‑7: Bachelor’s degree in Nursing with eligibility under the Superior Academic Achievement provision; or bachelor’s degree with one year of experience; or diploma/associate degree with two years of experience; or one year of graduate education.
  • GS‑9: Master’s degree in Nursing; or at least one year of professional nursing experience and a bachelor’s, diploma, or associate degree.
Minimum Qualifications (Specialized Experience)
  • GS‑07: One year of outpatient nursing duties, including triage, assessment, provider standing orders, medication administration, use of outpatient equipment, and patient communication.
  • GS‑09: One year of outpatient nursing duties that includes standardized disease management, comprehensive assessment, care planning, referral coordination, medication administration, emergency response, staff training, and quality improvement.
