Job description

Summary

This position exists to promote excellence in clinical practice in antepartum, intrapartum, postpartum, and well woman care; and in education, consultant services, and clinical research.

Essential Functions

Clinical practice:

  1. Provide full-scope midwifery care; obtain relevant health history and comprehensive physical exam, preventative screening, and identification of medical and obstetric risk factors.
  2. Formulates appropriate differential diagnoses and identification of individual, family, and community needs.
  3. Develops treatment plan to maximize the health potential of the individual, family, and/or community in the outpatient as well as in the inpatient setting.
  4. May initiate or participate in patient care conferences.
  5. Orders and adjusts medications per collaborative written agreement and prescriptive authority in accordance with the Indiana Nurse Practice Act.
  6. Serves as clinical resource person for the nursing staff, physicians, hospital, and other health care providers.
  7. Performs outpatient fetal surveillance, including non-stress tests.
  8. Hospital duties include: triage of obstetric patients, labor assessment and management, vaginal deliveries, repair of minor lacerations and episiotomies, immediate newborn assessment and stabilization, postpartum rounds, and discharge of patient.
  9. May perform additional duties with appropriate training.

Quality Assurance:

  1. Consults appropriately with physician sponsors.
  2. Manages low risk patients independently.
  3. Develops at least one procedure and/or clinical guideline related to OB/GYN based on current research each year.
  4. Identifies issues or processes, which may benefit from analysis with the overall goal for improvement.
  5. Acts to resolve problems that are identified.
  6. Participates in peer review.

Documentation:

Maintains adequate, concise, and legible medical records documenting findings, patient assessments, and services in concert with HealthNet & the organization guidelines.

Education:

Participates in the education of medical professionals, including midwifery, nurse practitioner, and medical students, and resident physicians.

Consultation:

Functions as a clinical expert by providing consultative services to health team members and the community.

Research:

Compares clinical practices to national standards. Incorporates scientific evidence into clinical practice and may participate in and/or conduct research in women's health.

QUALIFICATIONS/KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:

  1. Requires Certification in Nurse Midwifery by the American College of Nurse-Midwives.
  2. Requires current Indiana RN licensure.
  3. Requires current Indiana Nurse-Midwife/Certified Nurse-Midwife license.
  4. Requires Basic Life Support certification through the AHA. Other advanced life support certifications may be required per unit/department specialty according to patient care policies.
  5. Requires an Associates of Nursing (ASN); Bachelor of Nursing (BSN) preferred.
  6. New ASN RNs hired after January 1, 2013 will be required to complete their BSN within five (5) years from date of hire into this job.
  7. Requires staff privileges at the organization for inpatient care.
  8. Prescriptive authority in accordance with the Indiana Nurse Practice Act.
  9. Travel may be required.

EVALUATION OF PERFORMANCE:

The Nurse Midwife will receive annual performance evaluations that rate job performance in accordance with HealthNet vision, mission, policies, and procedures.
