Job description

Overview

The certified nurse midwife (CNM) is an advanced practice nurse responsible for the assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of nurse midwifery care for antepartum, intrapartum, postpartum, and newborn patients. The CNM performs physical exams, collects and documents data, manages labor and spontaneous delivery, conducts diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, orders and schedules laboratory studies and professional consultations, and prescribes appropriate interventions and medications. The CNM practice includes primary and specialized care provided in multiple locations, promotes safety and quality in clinical care, contributes to research and teaching, and provides leadership in the organization.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Provide direct clinical services and management of mothers and babies; document findings noting pertinent normal and abnormal findings; order and interpret appropriate diagnostic and laboratory tests; explain the necessity, preparation, nature, and anticipated effects of procedure(s) to patient, family, staff, and healthcare learners; perform approved therapeutic procedures based upon patient’s clinical status; document patient preparation and response to procedure(s).
  • Formulate and implement prenatal, intrapartum, postpartum, newborn, and interconceptional care; collaborate with physicians and nursing colleagues and document in medical records and appropriate narrative summaries; utilize prescriptive privileges as allowed by the Michigan Board of Nursing; document all prescriptions in patient’s medical record; assess patient for change in status and institute appropriate interventions; initiate necessary emergency interventions to stabilize patient.
  • Research and utilize current evidence-based decision-making in all clinical practice; incorporate clinical research findings in the development and implementation of standards of care.
  • Perform and participate in quality/performance improvement activities and clinical research; support accreditation, compliance, and regulatory activities of the organization.
  • Demonstrate responsibility for professional practice through active participation in professional organizations and continuing education.
  • Enhance the body of knowledge of nursing or area of specialization through exchange of ideas and knowledge in professional organizations, oral presentations, posters, research activities, and written publications.
  • Participate in integrated team meetings.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of professional nursing theory, clinical practice standards, normal maternal/fetal growth and development, and requirements of nurse midwifery practice; ability to independently seek out resources and solve complex problems; effective communication with patients, families, visitors, healthcare team, physicians, administrators, leadership, and others; use of sensory and cognitive functions to process and prioritize information, perform health assessments, treatment, and follow-up; fine motor skills; accurate record keeping, preparation of reports and presentations; proficiency with computer and new software; leadership in clinical expertise and organizational goals; navigation of hospital systems; ability to withstand prolonged standing and walking, and move or lift at least fifty pounds; focus and organization.

Education and Experience

At least 3 years practicing as a CNM.
