General Summary

Under limited supervision, the Nurse Manager is a Registered Nurse responsible for 24-hour accountability for ensuring safe, effective, and appropriate patient care on a designated unit. The Nurse Manager acts as the link between the Hospital’s Vision and the unit, with direct access to support services essential to nursing and patient care. The Nurse Manager maintains line authority over nursing staff, including PRN, SSP, and Float Pool personnel. The role requires competence in caring for all patients in the age groups served by the unit, as defined in the Unit Specific RN Performance Standards.

Reporting Relationships

Reports to the Director of Nursing – appropriate Division.

Qualifications
  • Graduation from an accredited school of nursing; BSN degree required, MSN preferred.
  • Current registration with the Maryland State Board of Nursing.
  • At least three (3) years of progressive hospital nursing experience with proven leadership ability.
  • For Peri-Operative, Mental Health, Critical Care, and Emergency Divisions, at least two (2) years of experience in the specific clinical specialty.
Working Conditions

Primarily indoor work. May be exposed to body fluids, communicable diseases, and hazardous materials, requiring adherence to Standard (Universal) Precautions and safe handling practices. The position involves potential exposure to multiple crisis situations and requires completion of an annual respirator mask fitting.

Physical Requirements

Heavy workload requiring attention to detail. Standing, walking, and stair climbing for 3-5 hours/day; sitting for 0-3 hours; bending, lifting, and reaching up to 100 pounds as per Safe Patient Lifting policy. Hearing and visual acuity needed for 5-8 hours/day.
